Darrell Baker Jr.'s Biography
Darrell Megail Baker Jr., hailing from Panama City, was born on March 27, 1998, to two veteran members of the United States Army. Moving to Hephzibah, Georgia, during his childhood allowed him to experience the thrill of American football, leading him on a path to play in the National Football League (NFL) as a professional football cornerback.
Baker’s time at Hephzibah High School marked significant achievements in his early career. He particularly shone in football and track and field, playing as a cornerback and wide receiver in the former. His junior year was defined by key plays during their regular season finale, landing the team a spot in the state playoffs and earning him the title of The Augusta Chronicle player of the week. Not one to limit himself, his senior year saw a state championship in the long jump and the accolade of “Boys’ track athlete of the year” by the same newspaper.
In 2016, Baker’s journey to professional sports saw a significant milestone. He started attending Georgia Southern University and became a walk-on member of their football team. The first year saw him as a redshirt, but the following seasons propelled a significant uptick in his playing time and role within the team. He recorded 18 tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble in his second year, proving himself a promising player.
Baker’s junior year in 2019 had him play in all 12 games, starting three and recording an impressive tally of two pass breakups and 23 tackles. It also marked his astounding performance in a total of 280 snaps. The following year presented him with his first time as a full-time starter, starting all 12 games and finishing with 34 tackles, seven pass breakups, and an interception. His efforts were recognized, earning him a spot as a third-team all-conference pick by Pro Football Focus (PFF).
The COVID-19 pandemic granted him an extra year of eligibility, and Baker chose to return to Georgia Southern for his sixth season in 2021. He started in eight games, recorded 32 tackles, eight pass breakups, and a forced fumble, accomplishing this over 499 snaps. He left college with an impressive record of 111 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and 18 pass breakups.
Despite remaining unselected in the 2022 NFL draft, Baker’s talent did not go unnoticed. He was swiftly signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent but was waived on August 29 during roster cuts.
Following a brief period of uncertainty, Baker was then signed to the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad on September 13, 2022. His first NFL debut came during their Week 15 game against the Minnesota Vikings in a narrow loss. Through 14 special teams snaps, he had the opportunity to impress, and impress he did. He was included in the active roster on December 28, 2022, and began his professional career with a bang by recovering a fumble during the Colts’ Week 18 game against the Houston Texans.
Baker maintained his spot on the Colts’ final roster in 2023, playing in 14 games with six starts and finishing second on the team in pass breakups. Following this, he signed a one-year contract extension with the Colts on January 8, 2024. However, September of the same year saw him waived by the Colts.
After being temporarily without a team, Baker was claimed off waivers by the Tennessee Titans on August 29, 2024.
