BIOGRAPHY
Darnay Darius Robert Holmes, born on June 23, 1998, is an accomplished American professional football player who plays as a cornerback for the Las Vegas Raiders in the National Football League (NFL). Holmes is not a stranger to the NFL world as he was born into a family with strong connections to it – his father, Darick Holmes, had a successful career in the NFL from 1995 to 1999.
Holmes’ illustrious journey to professional football began at Calabasas High School, located in Calabasas, California, where his exceptional talents and relentless work ethic set him apart. While he was a student there, he became instrumental in leading the school’s football team, the Coyotes, to their first-ever California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) title. He scored an impressive five touchdowns on offense, defense, and special teams, powering his team to claim an outstanding 42–3 win over Palos Verdes. His high school accomplishments were crowned in 2017 when he had a remarkable performance in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Regarded as a five-star recruit for his commendable high school career, Holmes’ choice of college captured headlines as he committed to playing college football at the prestigious University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). After an early enrollment, which allowed him the opportunity to participate in the spring game, Holmes played for the Bruins from 2017 to 2019. His amazing athleticism and undeniable potential propelled him to become a starter during his freshman year itself, ultimately gaining him a spot in 33 out of the 35 games he played during his collegiate career.
Following his successful tour of duty at UCLA, Holmes shifted sights towards the 2020 NFL Draft after the conclusion of the 2019 season. He left an indelible mark at UCLA with his remarkable record of 120 tackles, eight interceptions, and two touchdowns.
Selected by the New York Giants with the 110th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft’s fourth round, Holmes’ NFL journey began. He enjoyed a significant personal success during Week 13 against the Seattle Seahawks when he recorded his first career interception off a pass thrown by the legendary Russell Wilson, contributing to a crucial 17–12 win.
However, Holmes’ career suffered a setback on November 30, 2021, when he incurred a rib injury after intercepting a pass from the Eagles’ quarterback, Jalen Hurts. This injury put Holmes on the injured reserve list. Displaying a strong spirit of resilience and commitment to his fans and team, Holmes re-signed with the Giants on March 20, 2024, after his recovery.
Despite being released by the Giants on August 27, 2024, good news awaited Holmes. Just a day after his release, Holmes was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders on August 28, 2024. This marked the beginning of a new journey to further enhance his professional NFL career. All in all, Holmes’ inspiring football journey and his determination to persevere despite the obstacles stand as a testament to his dedication and love for football.
