Eisenhower Fellow in 2013, he embarked on a global academic expedition to Ireland and Germany to study training and community policing in Europe for four weeks.
Bright minds attract recognition, and Isom’s acumen was no exception. The University of Chicago Institute of Politics identified and invited him as an IOP Fellow in 2016. He utilized this platform to deliver a series of insightful seminars on police and community relations, foreseeing the future of American policing.
Post-retirement from the St. Louis Police Department, Isom commenced his academic career on January 1, 2013, at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). Respected as E. Desmond Lee Professor of Policing and the Community, he currently serves in the Criminology and Criminal Justice Department at UMSL.
Isom’s reputation and expertise earned him the appointment as the Director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety under Governor Jay Nixon’s Cabinet in August 2014. Later that year, in November, Governor Nixon established the Ferguson Commission – a volunteer force of 16 diverse community leaders. Their mission was to engage with area organizations, national thought leaders, institutions, experts, and citizens. As a testament to his formidable repute, Isom was selected as a Commissioner and served as the co-chair of the commission task force on police and community relations.
In April 2021, Mayor Tishaura Jones appointed him as the Interim Director of the Public Safety Department – City of St. Louis. Concurrently, he also took a leave of absence from his position as the executive director of the Regional Justice Information Service – commonly known as REJIS.
