Chukwuma Okorafor was born on August 8, 1997, in Nigeria. His early years were marked by extensive travels across the African continent, with stops in South Africa and Botswana, before ultimately his family decided to emigrate to the United States in 2010. Once in the U.S., Okorafor attended Southfield High School in Southfield, Michigan. Displaying proficiency as a football player in high school, he started at both the offensive and defensive line. His impressive performances didn’t go unnoticed as he was recognized as a 3-star recruit by 247Sports, and was ranked as the 11th best football recruit in Michigan during his senior year. As a much sought-after talent, Okorafor received tempting offers from numerous programs, including Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Ohio State, and Oklahoma. Despite the abundance of choices, he committed his skills to Western Michigan due to its convenient location and the school’s attractive prospect of starting him as a true freshman.

Okorafor’s college football career with Western Michigan from 2014 to 2017 wasn’t anything short of remarkable. He proved himself a formidable force on the field. In 2016 and 2017, he was named to the All-Mid-American Conference first-team. The 2017 season witnessed a remarkable peak with Okorafor earning a place as a member of the First Team All-American under the Football Writers Association of America.

Continuing his football journey, Okorafor participated in the 2018 Reese’s Senior Bowl on January 27, 2018. As a member of the North team, he was tested against the South Team, unfortunately experiencing a significant 45-16 defeat. The months that followed saw Okorafor involved in private workouts and visits with NFL teams, namely, the Washington Redskins and the Philadelphia Eagles. He emerged from these tests ranked as the sixth-best offensive tackle according to Sports Illustrated, and the ninth-best according to DraftScout.com – an impressive accomplishment for the promising player.

His big break, however, came with the 2018 NFL draft when the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the third round as the 92nd overall and 11th offensive tackle. This led to a four-year contract worth $3.40 million, solidifying his status in the league and marking the start of his professional career.

Thrown directly into the fray, Okorafor made his first NFL start on November 25, 2018, against the Denver Broncos, stepping in for injured Marcus Gilbert and Matt Feiler. The following year, he again came to the team’s rescue when he took over from the injured Ramon Foster to start against the Los Angeles Rams.

New heights were reached in 2022 when he signed a lucrative three-year contract extension worth $29.25 million with the Steelers. However, the journey took another turn when he was unexpectedly released by the Steelers on February 20, 2024. Despite this setback, Okorafor didn’t remain a free agent for long. The New England Patriots swiftly signed him to a one-year contract on March 7, 2024.

His journey with the Patriots was a roller-coaster experience. After being named the Week 1 starting left tackle, he was benched midway through the game due to poor performance. Things took a more downward turn as he was placed on the exempt/left squad list before the second week. Okorafor did not return to the team after the five-day exemption period passed, thus truncating his season as the team policy would not allow him to play for the rest of the season.
