Christian Holmes

Born on September 14, 1997, in Atlanta, Georgia, Christian Holmes revealed his affinity for football early on, honing his skills as a dynamic cornerback and wide receiver during his time at McNair High School. Unsurprisingly, his promising high school performances caught the attention of several college scouts, ultimately leading to a commitment to play college football at the University of Missouri.

Holmes’ time at Missouri started somewhat muted. As a true freshman for the Missouri Tigers in 2016, he saw limited action, playing only 10 games during the season and recording a single tackle. Unfortunately, Holmes’ momentum was impeded in his second year, as he was redshirted due to a shoulder injury sustained during a pre-season scrimmage. Despite this setback, his tenacity and determination were not dampened.

Returning on the field as a redshirt sophomore, Holmes demonstrated a remarkable comeback, featuring in 13 games. He even started 8 of these games, quite a leap from his single tackle. Displaying his prowess as a cornerback, he recorded 12 pass break-ups and made two crucial interceptions. One of these interceptions led to a defining moment in his early career, a touchdown that showcased his skill and potential on a larger platform.

In February 2020, seeking a fresh environment and new opportunities, Holmes transferred to Oklahoma State. In his first season with the Cowboys, he quickly rose to prominence. Despite being a newcomer, he played all 11 games and even started the last two. His performance, 25 total tackles, and 6 broken-up passes clearly won the coaching staff’s trust.

His final season with the Cowboys continued the trend of his burgeoning success. Holmes started all 13 games, including the notable 2021 Big 12 Championship Game. Named to the All-Big 12 Conference second-team by the Associated Press, his season was laden with accolades, also earning him All-Big 12 Academic honors. Ending the season with 39 tackles, an interception, and seven pass break-ups, Holmes established himself as a stalwart in the Oklahoma cornerback line.

Drawing the eyes of professional scouts, Holmes was selected by the Washington Commanders as the 240th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft. The momentous occasion was solidified on May 6, 2022, as he signed his four-year rookie contract.

Holmes’ professional career was one of consistent growth and maturation. Week 6 against the Chicago Bears saw him make a deciding special teams play in the fourth quarter. Holmes’ timely recovery of a muffed punt by Chicago returner Velus Jones Jr. on the Bears’ six-yard line led to the Commanders’ lone touchdown in their 12-7 victory. However, his journey with the Commanders ended when he was released on August 4, 2024.

In a swift turn of events, the next day, Holmes was claimed off waivers by the New York Giants. His tenure with the Giants, though, would be brief, as he was waived on August 25, reverting to the status of a free agent.
