Chris Boswell's Biography
Christopher Lynn Boswell, popularly known as Chris, was born on March 16, 1991, and made a name for himself as an American professional football player. Currently, he is a placekicker for the much-famed Pittsburgh Steelers team of the National Football League. Born and raised with a sports background where his father had grown up in Brazil playing street soccer, Boswell followed his father’s footsteps but chose a different sport – Football.
Boswell began his high school career playing football at Fossil Ridge High School, where he honed his skills in the game. His excellence on the field couldn’t be overlooked and as a result, he received numerous prestigious Power 5 offers. Eventually, Boswell decided to play college football at Rice, where he had a remarkably good run.
While at Rice, he racked up 358 career points which placed him second on the all-time Rice scoring list, next to Jarett Dillard, a former NFL wide receiver. In his 2012 season, Boswell led Conference USA in the field goals attempted and tied for first in field goals made.
As 2014 arrived, Boswell signed up with the Houston Texans, to compete with Randy Bullock. Unfortunately, his stint with the Texans was short-lived as he was cut in August the same year but was re-signed to the practice squad in September. However, 2015 started off better for Boswell as he signed a reserve/future contract with the New York Giants. Yet again, he had to face turbulence in his career as the Giants waived him on failing to make the final 53-man roster. But, on October 3, 2015, Boswell rebounded by signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he became their fourth placekicker that year.
Despite a shaky start to his professional career, Boswell made his NFL debut on October 12 and rose to fame for completing all three of his extra points and making a 47-yard field goal attempt in a victory over the San Diego Chargers. He also connected on the longest debut conversion in team history, a record previously held by Todd Peterson. In subsequent games, he continued his stellar performance, setting new records and earning multiple accolades, including the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month award in January 2016.
In 2018, on signing a new five-year deal with the Steelers, he was later named a captain alongside Ben Roethlisberger, Maurkice Pouncey, and Cameron Heyward. However, the year ended on a low note as Boswell was placed on injured reserve due to a grade-2 tear in his groin.
2019 saw an impressive comeback by Boswell as he maintained a successful conversion rate of 93.5% on field goal attempts and managed a perfect record on extra point attempts. His upward trajectory continued in the 2020 season with strong performances in his 13 games during the season.
However, the seasons following 2020 were filled with ups and downs. Despite a few missed chances, Boswell always managed to rebound impressively. For instance, on missing a 55-yard field goal in the season opener against the Bengals in 2022, he successfully kicked a 53-yard game-winning field goal in the same game.
As of 2024, Boswell continues to be a pivotal player in the Steelers. In a game against the Atlanta Falcons, he became the first player in Steelers franchise history to make at least three field goals from over 50 yards away, earning him the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his outstanding performance.
In conclusion, despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks throughout his career, Boswell’s resilience, dedication, and passion for football have enabled him to etch his name in the annals of the NFL and continue to contribute to his team’s success.
