Chase Lucas, born March 4, 1997, is an accomplished American professional football cornerback, presently making his name in the National Football League (NFL) with the San Francisco 49ers. His journey to professional football started at Chandler High School in Chandler, Arizona and spans through tumultuous times with the Detroit Lions. Known for his exceptional talent, Lucas’ passion, skill, and dedication have defined his career as an NFL cornerback.

Lucas’ football journey began in high school when he started as a running back during his sophomore year at Chandler High School. His industrious play facilitated the team in clinching its first state championship since 1949 during his junior year, a memory that Lucas cherishes. Notably, the team that achieved this historical feat featured future NFL players N’Keal Harry and Bryce Perkins, offering a glimpse of the talent nurtured at Chandler High School. Demonstrating his contributions to the victory, Lucas amassed 113 rushing yards and 37 receiving yards in the 28-7 triumph over Chandler Hamilton. Due to his commendable performances, Lucas was selected to play in the U.S. Army All American Bowl.

Upon transitioning to college football at Arizona State University (ASU), Lucas impressed with his talent during his first year. ASU coach Todd Graham deliberated over whether to capitalize on Lucas’ skills immediately. However, choosing to prioritize his long-term development, he decided to preserve Lucas’ eligibility so he could learn and grow. This decision led Lucas to redshirt his first year at ASU, setting the stage for a remarkable redshirt freshman year.

Following a redshirt year, Lucas hit the ground running as a redshirt freshman. His exceptional performances gained recognition from various quarters. He was named to the USA Today All-Freshman team and was part of the All-Pac-12 Conference Second Team. Notably, he was the only freshman to earn all-conference honors in Pac-12. As Lucas transitioned into his sophomore year, he had already carved his niche, becoming the top cornerback for Arizona State during spring training.

Highlighting his journey at Arizona State University, Lucas captained the Sun Devils’ team in his final season and earned an honorable mention as an all-conference selection. This recognition illuminated his impressive contribution to the Sun Devils during his tenure.

Lucas’ astonishing collegiate career caught the attention of NFL scouts, prompting the Detroit Lions to select him in the seventh round, 237th overall, in the 2022 NFL draft. Unfortunately, his journey with the Lions was marked by a rollercoaster of events. After being drafted, Lucas found himself placed on injured reserve on December 10, 2022. The subsequent year witnessed Lucas being waived by the Lions on August 29, 2023, only to be re-signed to the practice squad. Within a month, Lucas was moved up to the active roster on September 16, 2023. Despite this promotion, Lucas was released again on December 28, 2023, and re-signed to the practice squad. In a turn of fortune, Lucas was again part of the active roster on January 13, 2024, reinforcing his resilience.

Following an eventful tenure with the Lions, Lucas embarked on a new NFL journey by signing a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers on March 18, 2024. Despite being waived on August 27, Lucas proved his invaluable skills and resilience once more when he was re-signed to the 49ers’ practice squad.
