Chad Muma's Biography

Chad Tyler Muma, affectionately known as Chad Muma, was born on August 18, 1999. Today, he’s recognized as a stalwart in American professional football. Playing as a linebacker for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the National Football League (NFL), Chad also enjoys an illustrious career that can be traced back to his college years playing football at Wyoming.

Raised in Lone Tree, Colorado, Chad’s overlapping journey with Type 1 diabetes began young. In his seventh-grade year, Chad lost 30 pounds abruptly and was shortly thereafter diagnosed with the chronic condition. Despite his health hardship, Chad never allowed his condition to overshadow his school years. In fact, he was crowned homecoming king and Mr. Titan in 2017.

Chad’s high school years were equally eventful as he honed his athletic prowess at Legend High School. Initially, he played as a defensive back and honored his father, a football veteran himself, by donning the #19 jersey. However, his junior year thrust him into adversity as he suffered a clavicle bone break while playing 7-on-7. His recovery was as remarkable as his resilience as he emerged from surgery ready to take on the entirety of the football season.

Chad not only recovered but also proved his caliber as a player by finishing his senior season with 77 tackles and eight tackles for loss. His commendable performance resulted in his selection to the second-team Class 5A All-State. Considering the fact that he had missed half the games due to a seventy-percent torn patella, the feat seemed even more astonishing.

The invitation to play college football at Wyoming came as a welcome affair for Chad. Not only was it a great opportunity for him, but it was also a chance to uphold a family legacy that saw his father and maternal grandfather play at the same esteemed institution. Chad proudly chose Wyoming over other impressive offers from football programs like Colorado State, Hawaii, and Nevada.

While known for his football exploits, Chad also dipped his toes into the world of basketball in his junior year. His stats were modest, averaging 0.9 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 0.1 assists per game in the 2016-2017 season. However, his team made it to the CHSAA Boys Basketball State Championship Tournament and managed to carve out a spot in the Sweet 16 before losing to Mountain Vista.

Chad’s curiosity for sports extended into Track and Field, where from 2015 to 2017, he took part in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter sprints, and Long Jump. His sophomore season saw some of his best performances, including a formidable 20′ 2.00″ long jump record.

Having built a multifaceted high school sports career, Chad entered the University of Wyoming, where he played in all of his freshman year’s games. It was mainly on special teams where Chad began to turn heads and, during his sophomore year, moved into a more integral role on defense. He finished the year with an impressive 51 total tackles.

Chad’s reputation as a top defender grew in his junior year, leading his team with 71 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and three sacks. His performance was repeatedly recognized, with him being named first-team All-Mountain West Conference.

His senior year saw Chad doubling his tackle output to 142, achieving eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, three interceptions for a total of 45 return yards, and a fumble recovery. His performance invited him to the 2022 Senior Bowl and as a finalist for the coveted Butkus Award.

After his outstanding college career at Wyoming, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Chad in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft (70th overall pick). As a rookie, Chad appeared in 16 regular season games, starting two, with 1.5 sacks, 47 total tackles, and one pass defended to his name. During his sophomore season, Chad appeared in 17 regular season games, with 15 tackles and two passes defended to his credit.

Off the field, Chad’s kin share his sports enthusiasm. His father, Ty Muma, and maternal grandfather, Rick Desmarais, are Wyoming football alumni. His younger siblings, sister Payton, a basketball player for Gonzaga University, and brother Jaxon, a footballer for the University of Sioux Falls, carry forward the family tradition.

On the personal front, Chad Muma got engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Alyssa Huey, on May 28, 2023, in Saint Augustine, Florida. They share ownership of a Goldendoodle named Ollie. Chad has also cultivated an interest in music since childhood, learning to play the piano and once notably performing “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis at a school event.

Amidst his engaging sports and personal life, there have also been few unexpected incidents. For instance, Chad once had his Subaru Outback stolen after accidentally leaving the keys in the car in 2017. Fortunately, the authorities recovered his car soon after, with his jersey and chest pads still intact.

Despite his exhausting career, Chad enjoys his downtime. In an interaction with the Jacksonville Jaguars media team, he revealed that his favorite song of 2023 is “get him back!” by Olivia Rodrigo. He’s also a fan of Adele and enjoys the high-energy vibes of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” before his games.
