Cade York's Biography

Cade York, born January 27, 2001, is an American professional football placekicker known for his remarkable kicking skills, which have resulted in him having an illustrious career in both college and professional football. York is a dynamic player who, despite the ongoing fluctuations of his career, continues to make significant contributions in every game he plays.

His journey began at Prosper High School, Texas, where he was a multi-talented student-athlete who excelled in both football and soccer. He was recognized as one of the nation’s top kicking prospects in football, setting an Under Armour All-America Game record for the longest field goal — an impressive 59-yard kick.

Despite his young age, York committed to playing college football at Louisiana State University (LSU). His performance during the Under Armour All-America Game indicated his potential, which further solidified his place at LSU.

As a freshman, he earned the starting kicker position for the LSU Tigers before the 2019 season. Even though he had a shaky start, missing an extra point and several field goals in the first few games, he quickly rebounded with impressive performances. This earned him a spot on the Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Freshman Team and second-team All-SEC as the Tigers went on to win the 2020 College Football Playoff.

His sophomore year witnessed more accomplishments, as York perfected his extra point attempts and missed only three-field goal attempts. His exceptional performance had him listed as a semi-finalist for the prestigious Lou Groza Award, given to the top placekicker in college football.

Particularly memorable is the December 12 game against Florida, in which York hit his career-long field goal of 57 yards, putting LSU ahead in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. His performance led the Tigers to an unexpected victory against the country’s then-No. 6 ranked team, further solidifying his status as an elite placekicker.

His accolades only continued to pile up as he concluded his sophomore year at LSU. He was named a first-team All-SEC by the coaches and second-team All-SEC by the Associated Press (AP). He was also honored as a second-team All-American by the AP and the Football Writers Association of America.

Following his successful college years, York was selected by the Cleveland Browns as the 124th pick in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. His professional debut against the Carolina Panthers reaffirmed his prowess. York converted all four-field goal attempts and both extra point attempts, one of which was a 58 yard game-winning field goal. This monumental display of skill during his first professional game earned him the American Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Despite struggling in the 2023 preseason and the Browns’ subsequent acquisition of Dustin Hopkins, York continued to make significant contributions when signed to the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans. His skill didn’t go unnoticed, and he was soon signed by the New York Giants, where he briefly played before sustaining a quad injury in practice.

Though he didn’t sign a reserve/future contract at the end of the season, York returned to the Browns after a brief stint as a free agent. However, amidst the twists and turns of his career, York was traded to the Washington Commanders, but his tenure there was short-lived. Following an underwhelming performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, York was released the day after the Commanders’ season opener.
