Brenden Bates, born October 17, 1999, is an accomplished American professional football player who is currently a tight end for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). He began his remarkable journey to the NFL through a series of successful endeavors in high school and college football. Bates enjoyed an illustrious stint with Kentucky Wildcats as a major highlight of his career before progressing to the pinnacle of American football.

Originally hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Bates was introduced to athletics at an early age, given each member of his family, including his parents, two siblings and even grandfather, were all into collegiate sports. This strong family culture eventually steered him towards sports, with a particular emphasis on American football. With the guidance of his athletic family, and the determination to succeed, Bates went on to play football, basketball, and compete in track and field at Moeller High School, Cincinnati.

While in high school, Bates made considerable strides in football. His talent and performance saw him twice named as the first-team All-Greater Catholic League. He proved his mettle as a senior, recording 17 receptions for 305 yards along with scoring 11 touchdowns. Not only was he a formidable player at a domestic level, but his talent also earned him a spot on the national team at the International Bowl.

As Bates continued developing his skills during high school, he was rapidly gaining recognition at a national level. Bates was a four-star recruit and became nationally recognized as one of the top tight ends. In addition to his phenomenal pass-catching abilities, Bates was respected for his excellent blocking skills. He was once quoted saying, “I take pride in blocking. I just love moving people against their will.”

His glowing high school career culminated in Bates committing to the Kentucky Wildcats for his collegiate football journey. His early years in Kentucky started with him redshirting as a true freshman in 2018, making appearances in only two games. However, he propelled to appear in 13 games in the following season, majorly as part of the special teams unit.

The 2020 season proved to be a challenging year for Bates. He was limited to only six games due to an injury but managed to make his first career catch within that period. In 2021, he regained his form, being a starter in six games and recording 11 catches for 70 yards, including his first-ever collegiate touchdown.

The subsequent seasons of 2022 and 2023 saw Bates continue to shine. Despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, he seized the opportunity offered by the extra year of eligibility to play a final season in 2023. His career at college ended on a high note, having made a mark with 26 catches for 272 yards, two touchdowns, and having started 25 of the 58 games he played.

Just when Bates was thinking he had reached the zenith of his football career, a fresh opportunity beckoned. Despite going unselected in the 2024 NFL draft, he was signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent. Bates quickly became a standout performer in the preseason, where he caught six passes for 100 yards.

However, this stint was short-lived as he was waived on August 27, as part of the roster cuts. It looked like this could be the end of his professional journey, but destiny had other plans: He was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets just one day after being waived. After releasing him on October 17, the Jets decided to re-sign him to the practice squad two days later.

Despite the ups and downs, Bates’ career is far from over. He has proven his critics wrong time and again, emerging stronger after every setback.
