Austin Calitro, an American professional footballer, was born on January 10, 1994. As a seasoned linebacker, Calitro is a dynamic force on the field. Despite currently being a free agent, his football journey comprises a series of illustrious stints with various National Football League (NFL) teams after a remarkable college football career.
Calitro first made a significant impact in college football at Villanova, one of the prominent sporting platforms for young talent. It was there he earned his reputation as a potent linebacker, leading Villanova in total tackles, registering 90 tackles, and forcing 3 fumbles in his junior season. His performance did not go unrecognized as he was rightly selected to the All-CAA Football first-team.
After college, Calitro decided to delve into a professional football career, signing with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2017. Just ten days later, he was waived by the Jets, yet this setback didn’t deter him from pursuing his passion for the sport.
On August 7, 2017, the San Francisco 49ers signed Calitro. However, his tenure with the 49ers lasted less than a month as he was waived on September 2, 2017. Calitro bounced back and was signed to the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad on September 4, 2017. He stayed with the team for a short period, until he was released on September 19, 2017.
In October of the same year, Calitro was signed to the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad. His hard work and perseverance earned him a reserve/future contract with the Browns on January 1, 2018. However, the Browns waived him in May the same year.
June 13, 2018, witnessed Calitro returning to the Seattle Seahawks. He played his first NFL game on September 9, 2018, against the Denver Broncos. Despite the team suffering a 27-24 loss, Calitro’s performance, which included five tackles, was a personal victory. He even got the chance to start in the epic Monday Night Football game against the Chicago Bears in Week 2.
However, on September 2, 2019, Calitro was waived by the Seahawks. The following day, he was claimed off waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars, indicating his significant value in the NFL. He re-signed with the Jaguars on April 22, 2020, but was waived five days later.
Calitro was immediately picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals on April 28, 2020. He was traded to the Denver Broncos for Christian Covington on September 4, 2020. After short stints on the injured list, Calitro was activated on October 31, 2020.
On May 17, 2021, he was signed by the Chicago Bears. However, after being placed on injured reserve, he was released on August 25, 2021.
