Wenyen Gabriel's Biography

Wenyen Gabriel, a South Sudanese-American professional basketball player, was born on March 26, 1997, in Khartoum, Sudan. His unique forename, meaning “wipe your tears” in the Dinka language, was a nod to the tragic passing of his infant sister a year prior to his birth. His early life was marked with hardship and displacement as his family fled the havoc of the Second Sudanese Civil War, moving to Cairo, Egypt just two weeks after his birth. With his mother working tirelessly to support the family and move his father to Cairo, Gabriel was primarily cared for by his seven-year-old brother, Komot. Their circumstances changed significantly two years later when the United Nations approved their relocation to Manchester, New Hampshire, a city with a substantial South Sudanese diaspora.

Gabriel’s athletic journey began in Manchester, where he played for Trinity High School for three years. Later, he shifted to Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Massachusetts in 2014. Demonstrating exceptional basketball prowess, Gabriel averaged 22.0 points per game, 14.0 rebounds per game, 7.0 blocks per game, and 6.3 assists per game in his senior year in 2015-2016. His exceptional performance as a student-athlete put him on the recruiting radar of several prestigious institutions. However, he decided to join the University of Kentucky, turning down offers from Maryland, Duke, UConn, and Providence.

Marked as a five-star recruit and numbered 14 in ESPN’s Top 100 Class of 2016 survey, Gabriel debuted at an exhibition match for Kentucky Wildcats against Clarion University in October 2016. His time at the University was a fundamental period of development, both as an athlete and an individual.

As a freshman, he took part in 38 games, 23 of which he started, averaging 4.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. By his sophomore year, Gabriel became a significant contributor to Kentucky’s success. He averaged 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in 37 games and led Kentucky with 40 blocked shots. Despite not being drafted in the 2018 NBA, Gabriel remained undaunted. He signed a two-way contract with the Sacramento Kings on July 31, 2018, following a successful stint at the 2018 NBA Summer League.

Gabriel’s professional career has seen him play for an impressive roster of NBA teams, including the Sacramento Kings, the Portland Trail Blazers, New Orleans Pelicans, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, and most recently, the Los Angeles Lakers. Gabriel made his Trail Blazers debut in January 2020, the same year he signed with New Orleans Pelicans. His diverse professional engagements have provided him with a vibrant range of experiences and learning opportunities, laying a firm foundation for his current position as a player for Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Israeli Basketball Premier League and EuroLeague.

In addition to his professional career, Gabriel has made substantial contributions to his native country’s athletic representation. He joined the South Sudan national team in 2023, participating in South Sudan’s debut at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. His participation marked a historical moment as the South Sudanese team emerged first amongst all African nations at the tournament, gaining automatic qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics men’s basketball tournament – a first for both Gabriel and his team.

Despite his global success, Gabriel remains grounded in his roots. Although he became a U.S. citizen in 2017 when his parents were naturalized, he still considers South Sudan his home. A bright beacon of resilience, perseverance, and unwavering dedication, Gabriel continues to inspire countless individuals both inside and outside the basketball arena. As his career evolves, his life and accomplishments will undoubtedly remain a compelling testament to the transformative power of sport.
