His passion for football and basketball emerged early, and his journey onto the soil of basketball courts began in the third grade when he participated in a local 3-on-3 tournament in Long Beach, California. This early initiation into the sport sowed the seeds of a future luminous career.

His debut on the basketball scene commenced at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance. Even as a freshman, Schakel demonstrated his ability, contributing to his team’s victory in the state’s Division IV Championship under the banner of the California Interscholastic Federation. He continued this winning streak into his senior year, helping secure the Open Division Championship, considered the pinnacle of achievement for high school basketball in the state.

His performance won him accolades like the All-CIF, All-Del Rey League, and All-CIF Southern Section Open Division titles, as well as inclusion in the Daily Breeze’s All-Area First Team. On top of everything, ESPN rated him as a 4-star recruit in the class of 2017. While scoring victories on the court, Schakel also excelled academically, graduating from high school with an impressive 4.2 GPA.

In 2017, Schakel decided to attend San Diego State University (SDSU) for his college studies despite receiving offers from prestigious universities like USC, Stanford, Rice University, and the University of California, Berkeley – a decision that helped him shape his impressive career with the San Diego State Aztecs. During his tenure with the Aztecs, he played 33 games in his freshman year, gradually establishing himself as a consistent presence, eventually becoming a regular starter in his junior year.

Schakel’s scoring prowess saw him notch up 225 field goals from behind the 3-point line, securing the third spot in SDSU’s history.
