Born on September 1, 2001, Gregory James Brown III is celebrated as an American professional basketball player currently playing for Mexico City Capitanes, a part of the NBA G League. Alongside his illustrious professional career, Brown’s journey has largely been influenced by his close family ties to the world of sports, most notably his uncle, Roderick Anderson, a former professional basketball player.

Hailing from Texas, Brown spent his early years learning the game from his uncle, honing his skills and developing a deep-seated love for basketball. This passion was brought to the fore when he attended Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas. During his tenure at Vandegrift, Brown proved his mettle as both an athlete and a scholar. Not limiting himself to basketball, he further exhibited his athletic prowess by competing in varsity track and field, where he excelled in the high jump.

In his freshman year, Brown already made a mark with his first triple-double, clocking in impressive statistics of 15 points, 14 rebounds, and a school record of 18 blocks in a win against Hutto High School. Displaying consistency in performance, he averaged 17.2 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks per game during his first year. His impressive play didn’t go unnoticed, earning him the All-Central Texas Newcomer of the Year honors from the Austin American-Statesman.

As he moved into his sophomore year, Brown continued to elevate his game with an impressive average of 27.4 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game. These stats led him to secure the District 25-6A offensive Most Valuable Player (MVP) honor, simultaneously leading the district in scoring and rebounding. His performance continued to skyrocket in his junior year, overshadowed only by a brief period of absence as he recovered from a dislocated finger.

Despite this minor setback, Brown demonstrated not just his athletic prowess but the fortitude to bounce back. As a senior, he performed brilliantly, earning numerous accolades such as District 13-6A MVP, Texas Gatorade Player of the Year, and the Austin American-Statesman All-Central Texas Player of the Year awards. Leading Vandegrift to its first district success, bringing the school a 33-3 record and earmarking it as a formidable challenger in the field.

After high school, Brown decided to commit his future to college basketball, choosing Texas over numerous other offers. During his college debut on November 25, 2020, Brown displayed his incredible talent scoring 11 points and claiming 10 rebounds in a 91-55 victory against Texas-Rio Grande Valley. Overtaking his previous performance, Brown went on display a career-high 24 points during a 77-74 win against Oklahoma State. By the end of his freshman year, Brown declared for the 2021 NBA draft, ending his collegiate career with an impressive average of 9.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

Gregory Brown III’s professional journey began with his selection in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft with the 43rd pick by the New Orleans Pelicans. Eventually moving to the Portland Trail Blazers, Brown signed a 3-year, $4.3 million rookie scale contract on August 12, 2021. His debut performance on October 23 was indicative of the stellar career ahead of him, scoring four points and three rebounds in a 134-105 victory against the Phoenix Suns.

Despite making strides in his career, Brown faced a significant setback when he was waived by the Blazers in February 2023. However, he swiftly found a new home with the Ontario Clippers the following month. By August that year, he was signed by the Dallas Mavericks who recognized his potential and converted his deal into a two-way contract. Brown’s contribution led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, where they were eventually bested by the Boston Celtics.
