Cody Martin

Cody Martin, a prominent figure in the National Basketball Association (NBA), was born on September 28, 1995, in Mocksville, North Carolina. Raised alongside his identical twin brother, Caleb, basketball became an integral part of Cody’s life from an early age. The Martin twins demonstrated commendable potential and talent in the sport, hinting at professional basketball prospects down the line.

Cody Martin began his basketball journey at Davie County High School in his home town. However, he transferred to Oak Hill Academy for his junior and senior years, a move which proved to be instrumental in his development as a top-tier player.

He attended North Carolina State University, where both he and Caleb played for the NC State Wolfpack. During his two years at NC State, Cody averaged 6.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. His most notable achievement was making it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament in his freshman year.

However, in March 2016, Cody announced his decision to transfer from NC State, along with his twin, due to significant coaching changes. The Martin twins chose the University of Nevada, Reno, after considering offers from various other schools. Cody redshirted his first year at Nevada due to NCAA transfer rules.

Upon resuming play in the 2017-2018 season, Cody played a significant role in the Nevada Wolf Pack’s successful campaigns, even leading them to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament once again. He also earned the Mountain West Conference (MWC) Defensive Player of the Year award in his junior year, showcasing his myriad skills on the basketball court.

His senior year saw Cody emerge as one of the top players in the MWC. In addition to winning the MWC Defensive Player of the Year for the second time, he was also named to the All-MWC First Team and was one of 10 finalists for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, a prestigious accolade in college basketball.

In July 2019, Cody realized his dream of playing in the NBA when he was selected as the 36th overall pick in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets. His debut NBA game came on October 27, 2019, in a match against the Los Angeles Lakers. He also became an integral part of the Hornets’ rotation, demonstrating his impressive defensive capabilities and aptitude for playmaking.

Cody’s rookie season saw him average 5.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in 18.8 minutes per contest. He was ranked fourth among all rookies in assist to turnover ratio, making a name for himself as a reliable player with excellent court vision and good decision-making skills.

In his second season, despite being hampered by injuries, Cody continued to showcase his abilities as a player. His ability to read the game, coupled with his versatility, gives Charlotte a player who can fit seamlessly into various lineup configurations.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 205 pounds, Cody possesses the physical attributes to guard multiple positions. His agility, speed, and basketball IQ make him a formidable defensive force. Offensively, while not an elite scorer, he is a capable playmaker, able to create opportunities for his teammates and run the floor effectively. His excellent decision-making abilities and passing vision make him a reliable player in clutch situations.

However, Cody also acknowledges areas for improvement in his game. He works constantly on his shooting but struggles from behind the arc. He realizes that developing a reliable three-point shot is crucial in the modern NBA and could considerably enhance his offensive repertoire.

Off the court, Cody, like his brother, values education and in May 2018, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in General Studies at the University of Nevada.
