He was born on October 22, 1992 in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and began training in martial arts at an early age. After competing successfully at various regional events, Nicolau earned himself a spot at the UFC in 2016 as part of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 4.

In 2019 Nicolau became one half of another exciting matchup when he faced Brazilian compatriot Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 237 where he delighted fans with an entertaining three round affair before eventually losing via unanimous decision judges scorecards despite pushing Pantoja to the brink throughout most of their encounter. Most recently Matheus returned to action where suffered yet another defeat this time to Kai Kara France due some controversial scorecards from ringside judges that awarded Francisco all three rounds despite putting forth an admirable effort throughout their entire 15 minute affair earning him Fight of the Night accolades once again proving that even though things don’t always go your way you can still put on an incredible performance regardless of outcome .
