BIOGRAPHY

Magomed Mustafaev is a well-regarded Russian mixed martial artist known for his fierce prowess and strategic skillset in the demanding sport of mixed martial arts, MMA. Born on August 2, 1988, in the quaint village of Aimaki located in modern-day Dagestan, Mustafaev’s journey in martial arts began at a young age. His initiation into wrestling started in elementary school where he showed an affinity for the sport, laying the foundation for a future career in MMA. Upon completing high school, he relocated to Sochi, where he ventured into MMA training.

Mustafaev’s first taste of professional competitiveness in MMA came on April 29, 2011. He won his debut match against fellow Russian Marat Medzhidov in a remarkable showdown that ended with Medzhidov’s technical knockout in the first round. His unbeaten streak hit a speed bump in his second professional fight against Dagestani Arsen Ubaidulaev, where he fell victim to a rear-naked choke less than three months after his debut. The loss was a significant learning experience for Mustafaev but did not dampen his spirit.

Following the loss, Mustafaev began a marvellous comeback run that kicked off with his fruitful match on March 14, 2014, against Andrei Koshkin at M-1 Challenge 46. Mustafaev claimed victory in the match via submission in the second round. It was in the same year that Mustafaev competed and won the Sochi Star 2014 Welterweight Grand Prix, having won both his fights against Amirkhan Adaev and Gleb Morozov by knockout.

Mustafaev’s career gathered momentum as he clinched the Grand Prix tournament and rode a ten-match winning streak that propelled him into the spotlight. Subsequently, on November 6, 2014, he signed with the prestigious Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and transitioned from the Welterweight to the Lightweight division.

In his UFC debut on June 20, 2015, Mustafaev showcased his power and strategic acuity, defeating Piotr Hallmann by a technical knockout due to multiple cuts surrounding Hallmann’s eyes. Following his victory, Mustafaev claimed another impressive fight – the UFC 194, held on December 12, 2015. A quick liver kick ended the game, and he won by TKO in the first round against Joe Proctor.

The year 2016 presented Mustafaev’s first major setback in the UFC when he fought Kevin Lee at UFC Fight Night 99 on November 19, 2016, and suffered an arm injury. The injury led to a submission loss due to a rear-naked choke in the second round. His return fight in 2019 against Rafael Fiziev at UFC Fight Night 149 saw Mustafaev claiming victory by a first-round technical knockout, an awe-inspiring comeback after an extended hiatus due to his arm injury.

However, his winning streak ebbed away when he lost a match by split decision against Brad Riddell on February 23, 2020. Several of his scheduled matches were also scrapped due to an array of unforeseen circumstances. A scheduled fight for October 18, 2020, against Renato Moicano at UFC Fight Night 180 was called off when Moicano pulled out. Another bout against Damir Ismagulov on October 30, 2021, at UFC 267 was cancelled when Ismagulov missed weight by 7.5 pounds.

Unfortunately, a subsequent engagement with Jamie Mullarkey on October 22, 2022, did not materialise after Mullarkey pulled out due to an injury. Mustafaev was then supposed to face off against Yamato Nishikawa, but the match was ultimately scrapped due to contractual issues with Nishikawa. In October 2022, it was reported that Mustafaev was released by the UFC. Despite his professional setbacks, Mustafaev’s legacy in MMA, particularly in the lightweight division, remains beyond reproach. His professional journey and impressive win record mark him as one of the noteworthy figures in the field of MMA.
