After demolishing Ricky Simon in the main event of UFC Vegas 72, Chinese prospect Song Yadong brought a list of names he would like to fight going forward. While mentioning bantamweights Marlon Vera and Sean O’Malley as ideal opponents for him, he also added Rob Font and Petr Yan to the list during the post-fight press conference. But it looks like Song isn’t convinced that any of these fights will happen.
“I wanna fight top-5 fighters. Even Font — he’s [No.] 6, right? He’s ok,” Song said. “And ‘Chito’ Vera and Sean O’Malley — but probably they don’t give me Sean O’Malley, guys are protecting him. Whatever. Just top-5. My goal is to fight top-5 fighters this year.”
The 25-year-old fighter believes that his version of “Suga” won’t be allowed by the company. “I wanna fight top-5 fighters,” said Song at the press conference. “Even Font — he’s [No.] 6, right? He’s ok.” As for O’Malley, Song doesn’t think they’ll give him an opportunity either due to “guys protecting him”. Despite this setback, his goal is still clear: To fight a Top 5 Fighter by 2021.
Song’s timeline for another octagon appearance is also set – July or August depending on how his body heals after UFC Vegas 72; so it’s just a matter of time before we see who will be standing opposite Song next time round! A lot hangs in balance with each fighter coming from different backgrounds and their own unique stories behind them – which makes this potential matchup all the more exciting!
Marlon Vera (22-8-1) was on an incredible streak recently prior to Cory Sandhagen handing him a split decision in March 2021 – Knocking out former champs Dominick Cruz and Frankie Edgar along the way-. Sean O’Malley (16-1), on one hand ended up winning a split decision over Petr Yan in October 2022; but suffered defeat via TKO against Vera back in 2020 after going unbeaten in five fights before then. Meanwhile, Rob Font (20–6) had lost two consecutive fights against Jose Aldo and Marlon Vera before bouncing back with an impressive first round win over Adrian Yanez earlier this month – making things even more interesting moving forward if pitted against our protagonist here!.
It remains to be seen whether or not these dream matchups actually come true or not – but what can’t be denied is that there are some exciting opportunities ahead for both sides should any materialize! All eyes are now set on what comes next for Song Yadong – We can only wait till July/August eagerly hoping that he gets his wish fulfilled!.
