American football tight end Tyler Kroft, born October 15, 1992, has enjoyed a dynamic career since crossing paths with the NFL in 2015. A free agent as of the time of writing, his journey in professional football has seen him representing prominent teams like Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and San Francisco 49ers.

Kroft began his sporting journey at Downingtown East High School in Pennsylvania, where he was an active member of the school’s football team showcasing his skills as a tight end and wide receiver. Earning the label of a three-star recruit from Rivals.com, his athletic prowess paved his way to Rutgers University to play college football.

Embarking on his college career, Kroft was redshirted as a freshman in 2011 at Rutgers. Although his initial year was marked by limited opportunities, Tyler found his footing in 2012 when he made his presence felt in 11 games and recorded three receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. His 2013 performance escalated from his previous year’s efforts, seeing him start 12 out of 13 games and concluding the season with a team-leading 43 receptions and 573 yards, earning him a congratulatory first-team all-conference selection

Unfortunately, despite his sterling 2013 performance, Kroft’s redshirt junior year in 2014 saw him take on a restricted role. Even then, his admirable work ethic shone through when he bagged the “Loyal Knight” award for his commendable willingness to scale back.

Earning his stripes at college, Kroft made his foray into the professional football league when he was drafted in the third round, 85th overall in the 2015 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. Backing up Pro Bowl tight end Tyler Eifert, he remained a key figure in all 16 games of his rookie season. His tenacity finally reflected in the numbers when he scored his career’s first touchdown in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers.

The 2017 season was a turning point in Kroft’s career when an injury to first-string Tyler Eifert opened the door for him to the starting role. He capitalized on the opportunity by amassing six receptions for 68 yards and two touchdowns against the Cleveland Browns, setting new career bests.

Despite the promising progress, Kroft’s 2018 season was cut short due to a foot injury, leading to him being placed on injured reserve. However, he was unfazed and made an inspiring comeback in March 2019, signing a three-year, $18.75 million contract with the Buffalo Bills.

Injuries, however, continued to shadow Kroft’s stride. He broke his foot during a practice session on the first day of organized team activities, requiring surgery. Despite the setback, he finished the season with six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, contributing significantly to the Bills’ victory in a crucial Week 15 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tyler signed a one-year contract with the New York Jets in March 2021 and found himself on the injured reserve once again after a chest injury in Week 9. After his rapid recovery, he ended the season with 16 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown in nine games.

In 2022, Tyler Kroft joined the San Francisco 49ers, moving positions frequently and even facing criticism following the NFC Championship Game against the Eagles. Despite the tumultuous season, he started in four out of eleven games. In what was perhaps a foreshadowing of his career’s fluidity, he was released by San Francisco during the final roster cuts but was re-signed the very next day. Undeterred by turbulence in his career, Kroft continued to contribute to the game he loves.

Currently, Kroft is married and is a proud father of two children. The athlete’s legacy is much more than the touchdowns, receptions, and yards he achieved.
