Tre Herndon's Biography

Willie “Tre” Herndon III, better known as Tre Herndon, was born on March 5, 1996. As an American professional football cornerback, he is currently a free agent. Given his past involvement with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Herndon has shown a promising course in his football career. Coming from East Hamilton High School in Ooltewah, Tennessee, a suburb of Chattanooga, Herndon was a 3-star recruit in 2013. With his commitment to Vanderbilt University, he triggered the starting point of his football career.

During his high school years, Herndon proved his innate skills, becoming the first football player from East Hamilton to receive a scholarship from a Southeastern Conference school. Inspired by his parents, Willie Herndon, Jr. and Sabrina Herndon, who works at Unum, and his unnamed sister, Herndon chose to major in Sociology while working hard on his football skills. Additionally, Herndon is a practicing Muslim whose faith has certainly guided him in his decisions.

Upon committing to Vanderbilt University in 2013, Herndon played college football from 2014 to 2017. It was a fruitful experience for Herndon, with his senior season closing in 2017, and marking another significant milestone in his life — entering the 2018 NFL draft. Throughout his career at Vanderbilt, Herndon showed impressive performances, recording 122 tackles (2.5 for a loss), two interceptions, 20 pass break-ups, and one forced fumble.

On April 30, 2018, Herndon’s life took another exciting turn when the Jacksonville Jaguars signed him on a three-year contract worth $1.71 million, including $17,700 guaranteed and a signing bonus of $5,000. After undergoing training camp and competition for a roster spot, Herndon earned the fifth and final cornerback spot after surpassing Jalen Myrick. Behind Jalen Ramsey, A. J. Bouye, D. J. Hayden, and Tyler Patmon, Herndon was named as the fifth backup cornerback by head coach, Doug Marrone.

His journey with the Jaguars continued to evolve when Ramsey was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2019, promoting Herndon to the starting corner. One of his notable performances was during Week 8 against the New York Jets, intercepting quarterback Sam Darnold twice in the 29–15 win.

Through the 2020 season, Herndon continued to show his prowess. In Week 9, facing the Houston Texans, Herndon recorded his first career sack on Deshaun Watson during the 27–25 loss. However, life took a different turn on December 16, when Herndon was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Fortunately, he was back on the field three days later.

In 2021 and 2022, Herndon re-signed with the Jaguars, showing his loyalty to the team. Yet, in 2023, he chose to sign up with the New York Giants, an unforeseen twist in his career. Unfortunately, he was released by the giants on August 27, 2024.

Herndon remains committed to his field, using his expertise to help the upcoming generation. He announced a camp on June 22, 2024, for 9-12 graders in the Hamilton county school district. Although the journey has been rough and uneven, Herndon’s grit remains unshaken, and he continues to be an inspiration for many.
