Talanoa Hufanga's Biography

Talanoa Hufanga, born on February 1, 2000, is a distinguished American professional football player holding the position of safety for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). Throughout his football career, Hufanga has demonstrated exceptional skill and determination that has taken him to the heights of both college and professional football.

Raised in Corvallis, Oregon, Hufanga attended Crescent Valley High School where he first showed immense maturation and versatility in the sport. He played in varying positions such as safety, wide receiver, and quarterback which showcased his wide range of talents on the field. His abilities did not go unnoticed and led to his recognition as the Polynesian High School National Player of the Year in his senior year in 2017. His performance also earned him a spot in the esteemed 2018 U.S. Army All-American Game.

Upon graduating from high school, Hufanga made the decision to further his football career at the University of Southern California (USC), a testament to his dedication and commitment to the game. As a true freshman at USC in 2018, he played in eight games and started in five before his season was cut short due to a broken collarbone. Despite the abrupt end of his season, Hufanga still managed to rack up a considerable 51 tackles.

Returning in 2019 as a sophomore, his tenacity was evident as he played in and started in all ten games that year and recorded 90 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He continued to play for USC in his junior year in 2020 and made a mark in the university’s football history. That year, Hufanga and BYU quarterback Zach Wilson were honored as co-recipients of the 2020 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award. Hufanga also secured his place as a Consensus All-American and won the Pac-12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the 2020 season.

His exceptional college career caught the attention of the San Francisco 49ers who drafted him in the fifth round, 180th overall, in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 49ers signed him to a four-year rookie contract on May 13, 2021. During his rookie season, Hufanga proved to be a valuable asset to the team. He appeared in 15 games, of these, he started in three. His potential was seen during the Divisional Round of the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers. During this game, he recovered and returned a blocked punt that resulted in a critical touchdown and led to a 13–10 victory for the 49ers.

In the 2022 season, Hufanga continued carving a stellar path for himself. He scored a 52-yard pick six in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams, contributing to a 24–9 victory. The same season saw him play in all 17 regular-season games and all three playoff games for the 49ers. Throughout his appearances, he made 97 total tackles, four interceptions, nine passes defended, and two forced fumbles. His impressive performance in the 2022 season earned him a Pro Bowl nomination and first team All-Pro honors.

Tragically, during Week 11 of the 2023 season, Hufanga suffered a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and was put on injured reserve on November 21, 2023. Despite his absence, the 49ers went on to reach Super Bowl LVIII but missed the victory to the Kansas City Chiefs with a close score of 25–22.

Beyond his career, Hufanga has significant connections to the sport in his family. Of Tongan descent, he is the son of Tevita and Tanya Hufanga. He has a brother named TJ and he trains with the Hall of Fame safety Troy Polamalu. Additionally, Hufanga is the cousin of Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu and Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu.
