Shane Buechele's Biography

Shane Buechele, born on January 8, 1998, has emerged as a notable professional football quarterback in the United States. Shane has garnered attention due to his commendable performance with the Buffalo Bills, in the famous National Football League (NFL). The roots of his soaring football career can be traced back to his impressive stints with the Texas Longhorns and the SMU Mustangs during his college years.

Shane hails from Arlington, Texas, where he attended Lamar High School. There, he excelled not only in academics but also in various sports including football and baseball. His high school career was quite illustrious, clocking a total of 6,379 yards with 73 touchdowns as a quarterback and rushing for 1,805 yards and 21 touchdowns. Such phenomenal stats positioned him among the top quarterback recruits garnering him an invitation to the Elite 11 quarterback competition. Despite the intensive competition, he wowed the coaches with his accurate sporting skills and finished notably as the second overall.

Interestingly, Shane grew up in an Oklahoma Sooner dominated household, but he decided to break away from the mold by committing to the Texas Longhorns for college football.

During his freshman year with the Longhorns in 2016, Shane had to compete with Tyrone Swoopes for the starting quarterback mantle. However, due to his impressive talent, he succeeded in securing the coveted position. Making his first career start against the 10th-ranked Notre Dame, Shane not only became the second true freshman to commence at QB for Texas but also became the first player to achieve this feat since Bobby Layne in 1944.

An unranked Shane led the Longhorns to a magnificent 50–47 double-overtime victory against Notre Dame, despite the extreme pressure. This victory marked the first overtime game in the history of Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium and etched the match in the hearts of football fans as an instant classic. He had an impressive performance, concluding with 280 yards on 16 for 26 passing, for 2 touchdowns and one interception.

In a face-off against West Virginia, Shane overtook Colt McCoy by achieving most passing yards by a freshman in school history. By the end of his freshman season, he had amassed 2,958 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, and registered 11 interceptions.

In the opening game of the 2017 Texas season, Shane set his career records for completions, attempts, and yards, despite losing to Maryland 51–41. However, his position in the subsequent games was taken over by Sam Ehlinger due to recurring injuries. Shane did make a come-back leading Texas to victory over Iowa State but was sidelined due to injuries suffered in the subsequent two games against Kansas State and Oklahoma.

After graduating from Texas, Shane transferred to Southern Methodist University replacing Ben Hicks, who had transferred to the University of Arkansas. As a senior at SMU, he started his first game with a bang, securing 360 yards with one interception in the 37–30 victory over Arkansas State.

Although he remained undrafted in the 2021 NFL draft, Shane was signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2021. Despite primarily remaining inactive through his tenure with the Chiefs, Shane’s presence in the team still contributed to their Super Bowl LVII over the Philadelphia Eagles. However, he was dropped from the Chiefs in 2023 and later in the same year, he was signed to the Buffalo Bills practice squad.

Life wasn’t just about football for Shane. His father, Steve Buechele, played Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1985 to 1995 and is a TV analyst for the Texas Rangers. His brother, Garrett, followed his father’s footsteps in the world of baseball, playing at Oklahoma and in the minor leagues. Shane also tied the knot with his long-time girlfriend Paige Loren on March 12, 2023, in Grapevine, Texas.
