Born and raised in the United States, Dowdle’s love for football became evident rather early. He distinguished himself as a formidable player in A.C. Reynolds High School, where he transitioned from the position of a running back to a quarterback in his senior year. As a testament to his outstanding performance, the team recorded an impressive 11-2 overall record and remained undefeated within the conference. His exceptional football skills were further translated into numbers: 247 carries for 2,545 yards, 51 rushing touchdowns, 1,434 yards covered passing, 11 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and a striking 55-yard touchdown reception. His astonishing mark of 63 total touchdowns was a record for a single season within the Western North Carolina community.

Dowdle’s high school career was inundated with accolades, including the All-WNC Player of the Year, Parade All-American, and All-state honors. With these achievements and his skill set, he was an undeniable force on the field, attracting the attention of several colleges. Rated as a three-star recruit, he committed to play college football at the University of South Carolina, where the next stage of his athletic journey would unravel.

Expectedly, the transition from high school to collegiate sports brought new challenges. His freshman year was marked by a sports hernia, requiring offseason surgery and a subsequent period of recovery that saw him miss four games. Nevertheless, his spirit remained undeterred. He appeared in nine games that season, starting in seven and leading the team with 133 carries for 764 yards. Dowdle continued to demonstrate his versatility on the field, contributing 15 receptions for 55 yards and even scoring one receiving touchdown.

Entering his sophomore year as the starting running back, he participated in eight games, making four starts. Despite suffering a leg break during the seventh game against the University of Tennessee, which forced him to sit out the final regular-season games, he showed resilience. Recovering swiftly, he clocked 6 carries for 45 yards and a rushing touchdown in the 2018 Outback Bowl.

Throughout his junior and senior years, Dowdle continued to produce noteworthy performances. His senior year, however, was riddled with injuries that tested his endurance once more. A groin injury during the off-season limited his playing time, and a knee injury caused him to miss a few contests. Yet, he managed to finish his college career with great strides, ranking 15th on the school’s all-time rushing list.

Following his impressive run at the University of South Carolina, Dowdle made his professional debut in 2020. Despite going undrafted, he was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys and was one of ten rookies to make the team’s final roster. He displayed versatility in his rookie year, contributing to special teams as well as the running game.

Unfortunately, Dowdle’s journey in the NFL has not been without its fair share of injury setbacks. In 2021, he sustained a hip injury during a preseason game against the Houston Texans. The following year, he suffered an ankle injury, both instances leading to periods placed on injured reserve.
