BIOGRAPHY
Phillip Howard Dorsett II, known on the gridiron as Phillip Dorsett, was born on January 5, 1993. Having developed his skills as a professional American Football wide receiver, he’s played with various teams and is now a highly sought-after free agent.
Dorsett’s football journey began in St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he showcased his remarkable athleticism not just in football but also in track. Training under coach George Smith, young Dorsett was able to hone his wide receiver skills, collaborating with a future teammate, Duron Carter. His prowess on the field gained momentum throughout junior and senior year. By senior year, his performance of 35 receptions for 806 yards and 12 touchdowns enabled his team to win Florida’s 5A football championship and finish first in the Powerade Fab 50 ESPN Rise national poll.
In addition to his football accomplishments, Dorsett possessed tremendous talent in track & field as well. In both sprinting and jumping, he had a reputation as being one of Florida’s best competitors. How his dedication led him to achieve personal-best leaps of 7.55 and 14.59 meters in long and triple jump respectively and secured second and third place in 100 meters and 200 meters races at the FHSAA District Meet.
From high school, Dorsett took his athletic prowess to the University of Miami, committing to playing college football there. Despite receiving scholarship offers from multiple schools, including Florida, Ohio State, North Carolina, and Georgia, he decided to stick with Miami, little knowing that this decision would open doors to his future NFL career.
Dorsett was a part of the Miami team from 2011 to 2014. His freshman year, Dorsett showcased his budding potential with 14 receptions for 147 yards and a touchdown. His spectacular performance continued in his sophomore year, with an impressive 58 receptions for 842 yards and four touchdowns. Despite suffering from a knee injury in his junior year that reduced his participation in games, Dorsett returned with a stronger performance in his senior year, during which he recorded 36 receptions for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Dorsett’s outstanding performance in college football paid off when he was drafted 29th overall by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2015 NFL draft. His selection was met with surprise and some criticism, given the Colts’ depth at the wide receiver position. Nevertheless, Dorsett went on to prove his worth. He signed a four-year contract with the Colts catching his first NFL touchdown on a 35-yard reception from Andrew Luck within few weeks.
The following years of Dorsett’s career were marked by several transitions. In 2017, he was traded to the New England Patriots. Despite his limited playtime, Dorsett led his team to the Super Bowl, albeit with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2018, following the declination of a fifth-year option on his contract by Patriots Dorsett became a free agent, joining the Seattle Seahawks in 2020.
However, injuries kept him out of the game for much of his time with the Seahawks, leading to his transfer to Jacksonville Jaguars, and subsequently, to the Houston Texans – both in 2021. Throughout this time, Dorsett stayed resilient, leading to a considerable performance with 20 receptions for 257 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown by 2022.
Over the following year, Dorsett signed a one-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, only to be released later that year. He then joined the Denver Broncos, where he showcased his determination to continue his football career. Dorsett’s journey has been one marked by resilience, determination and a constant striving for excellence. It is for these reasons that he remains a noteworthy figure in the world of professional American Football.
