Pat Surtain II's Biography

Patrick Frank Surtain II, born on April 14, 2000, is an accomplished American professional football player. With his earliest years steeped in sportsmanship and athletic skill, he imbibed football ethos from his father, Patrick Surtain, who was a National Football League (NFL) professional before him.

From his high school days at American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida, under his father’s coaching, Surtain displayed a prodigious aptitude for football. In 2018, his talent garnered the limelight when he played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, marking his reputation as a five-star recruit. Following this, he committed to play college football, joining the Alabama Crimson Tide later that year.

Surtain’s debut year with Alabama in 2018 saw him scoring impressive plays. As a true freshman, he started 12 games, recorded 37 tackles, and accomplished his first interception. He reestablished his place as a starter in 2019 and raised his game, collecting 42 tackles, forcing three fumbles, making two interceptions, and preserving one quarterback pressure. By 2020, Surtain had not only cemented his place as a key player at Alabama, he had also garnered several preseason All-American honors.

However, his crowning accolade came the next year when he was named the Defensive MVP of the 2021 Rose Bowl. This achievement made an attractive prospect to the big leagues.

In the 2021 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos identified his potential and chose him in the first round, the ninth overall pick. By May 2021, Surtain had inked his rookie contract with the Broncos, a deal worth $20.9 million.

Starting his professional career under the spotlight, he saw his first career start and accomplished his first career interception during Week 2 on September 19, 2021, against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Continuing his formidable run, in Week 12, he managed five tackles and two interceptions in a win against the Los Angeles Chargers, earning him the AFC Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Surtain’s career as a rookie observed him starting in 16 games with impressive stats. His record boasted 58 total tackles, four interceptions, 14 passes defended, and an honored place in the 2021 All-Rookie Team by Pro Football Focus and the Pro Football Writers of America.

By the 2022 season, Surtain had become an established name in the NFL starting in all 17 games. His season performance led to a Pro Bowl honor and a first-Team All-Pro honor. He also ranked 49th in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2023. His 2023 NFL season recognition came with a Pro Bowl honor and a respected 52nd rank in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2024.

The Broncos fittingly picked the fifth-year option on Surtain’s contract in April 2024, and later that year, they extended his contract till 2029, making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. That year, his exceptional performance against the Las Vegas Raiders saw him return an interception 100 yards, securing his second career touchdown. This feat awarded him an AFC Defensive Player of the Week recognition.

Born into a family with NFL lineage, Patrick Surtain II’s journey in professional football has been marked by outstanding achievements. With a legacy to uphold and a promising career, he has made a name for himself as one of the persuasive forces in NFL. His thrilling journey filled with interceptions, tackles, and touchdowns continues to epitomize the spirit of the modern NFL player.
