P.J. Locke's Biography

A rich football heritage found in America has gifted many athletes to the National Football League, and one distinguished example is James Abner Locke III, who is professionally known as “P. J.” Locke. This American scrimmager was born on February 12, 1997 and has made a name for himself in the National Football League (NFL), steadily rising into prominence as a professional football safety for the Denver Broncos.

P. J.’s passion for football was visible early on, when he started showcasing his considerable skill and potential on the playing field of Central High School in Beaumont, Texas. His football journey would not stop there, as he would later attend the University of Texas, where he continued to play and cultivate his talents during his college years.

In 2019, a significant turn in Locke’s career took shape. He signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent after impressing scouts with his performances in the 2019 NFL draft. He strived to establish himself on April 29, 2019, aiming to prove his worth in the big leagues. However, his stint with the Steelers came to an end with an August 31st waivers wave.

Later in the year, on December 17, 2019, another opportunity presented itself as he joined the Denver Broncos’ practice squad. Even though he was waived before the start of the 2020 season on September 5, 2020, he was immediately recalled to the practice squad the following day.

Locke’s big break in the NFL came on September 14 when he was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for Denver’s Week 1 game against the Tennessee Titans. His performance there marked his official debut in the NFL. Although he was initially reverted back to the practice squad, evident talent and tenacity led the Broncos to promote Locke to their active roster permanently on September 24.

In the 2020 season, Locke decisively established himself as an invaluable team member, leading the Broncos in special team snaps. His upward trajectory was acknowledged by the Broncos, who re-signed Locke on March 16, 2023. Unfortunately, an injury landed him on the short-term reserve list on August 31. However, displaying his resilience and determination, Locke was activated on October 7, returning to the field with a palpable impact.

A few weeks later on October 22, Locke marked a milestone in his NFL career when he made his first interception. The quarterback, Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers, was targeting a pass when Locke intervened and sealed a Broncos victory in their home game.

Locke’s talent continued to bear fruit as, on March 11, 2024, the Broncos recognized his value by signing a contract extension. This two-year contract extension amounted to $7 million, reaffirming Locke’s exceptional performance and crucial contribution to the Denver Broncos.
