BIOGRAPHY
George “Leki” Fotu is a professional American football player, born on August 23, 1998. Currently, he is a defensive tackle for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). His journey as a sportsman started at a young age playing rugby before moving on to high school football at Herriman High School in Utah, where he sharpened his skills as a defensive end and occasionally as a tight end. This early passion and commitment to his craft paid off, as his team eventually clinched the Utah 5A state championship during his senior season.
Upon graduation, Fotu’s stellar performance caught the attention of several top-tier colleges including USC, Brigham Young and Oklahoma State. However, he accepted an offer from the University of Utah, making his commitment to the school on September 20, 2015.
Upon joining the Utah Utes, Fotu continued to display his talent and versatility on the football field. Despite discussions on shifting him from defensive end to offensive tackle after his sophomore season, Fotu transitioned successfully to the defensive tackle role. He claimed the starting spot and quickly showed the value he brought in this position.
After an impressive junior year, Fotu was recognized for his outstanding performance and was named first-team all-Pac-12 Conference. Not resting on his laurels, he entered his senior season with a reputation that secured him the recognition as a preseason All-American by ESPN.
Fotu’s senior season wasn’t without highlights. He was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week following an exceptional game against Cal during which he recorded a 13-yard sack. This accomplishment led to Fotu being named second-team midseason All-American by the Associated Press.
The outdoorsman’s football journey didn’t stop after his college career. In 2020, Fotu reached a significant milestone in his football career when he was selected in the fourth round of the NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals, making him the 114th overall pick. However, his progress was briefly stalled when an ankle injury placed him on injured reserve on November 14, 2020. Determined to recover, Fotu was active again by December 5, 2020. He made a notable comeback in Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles when he recorded his first career sack on fellow rookie Jalen Hurts, contributing to a 33–26 victory.
The 2021 season saw Fotu serving as the backup nose tackle for the Cardinals. However, it proved to be another successful season for him. Over the course of 17 games, which included three starts, he recorded 19 tackles, defended three passes, and forced a fumble.
In a new chapter of his career, Fotu joined the New York Jets on March 14, 2024. However, his progress was once again hindered due to injury, resulting in him being placed on injured reserve on August 27.
Off the field, Fotu’s life is steeped in football as well, with his three brothers having also played college football. His immersion in sports can be traced back to his early days in high school when he played rugby before shifting his focus entirely to football. Fotu’s rich heritage is an essential part of his story, as his parents, both born in Tonga, moved to America before his birth. The diverse cultural influences surely impart a unique aspect to his approach to the sport and life in general. His journey continues, symbolic of the strength, resilience, and determination that define him as a player.
