He quickly showed talent and interest in football, and throughout his high school years at Freedom High School, his performance on the field began to capture attention.

Displaying impressive skills as a running back in high school, he was named a Five-star recruit and considered one of the top running backs in the nation, receiving multiple scholarship offers. Ultimately, Mixon chose to attend the University of Oklahoma, where he had the chance to showcase and further hone his football skills.

From 2015 to 2016, he played two seasons with the Oklahoma Sooners, and his performance caught the eye of scouts across the National Football League (NFL).

Despite facing a fair amount of criticism due to the off-field incidents, with some teams reportedly removing him from their draft boards entirely, the Cincinnati Bengals decided to take a chance on Mixon. In the 2017 NFL Draft, he was chosen in the second round as the 48th overall pick by the Bengals.
