Jaleel McLaughlin's Biography

Jaleel McLaughlin, born on September 13, 2000, nurtured his love for sports at a tender age in Marshville, North Carolina, playing several sports like football, basketball, and track. Despite facing trying times, such as poverty, homelessness, and the loss of close family members, he persevered and emerged as a top-notch sports person.

Born as one of four children, McLaughlin was raised by his mother. His childhood was fraught with a series of adversities, beginning when his mother lost her job during his middle school years. This led them to live between hotels, motels, and their relatives’ houses. Tragedy struck again when his cousin and role model died of a brain tumor, closely followed by his grandmother’s death from a heart attack.

Up until this point, Jaleel had been residing in his grandmother’s house. The loss of the house forced him and his family to live in a car for several months. This parked car outside a McDonald’s became their sanctuary until they found shelter with a relative. It was after several months of homelessness that McLaughlin got to enter Forest Hills High School.

At Forest Hills, McLaughlin’s outstanding performance in track, football, and basketball won him numerous accolades. He led the basketball team to win the state championship and earned several championships in track. His football career soared with 1,401 rushing yards in just 12 games.

Yet, his deserving performance did not impress NCAA Division I teams, with interest coming only from teams in Division II. Furthermore, most teams had interest in him for the defensive back position, attributing their choice to his small size. Notre Dame College was one of the few schools that allowed him to play as a running back, and he committed to play for them.

In his freshman year as a Notre Dame Falcon, he set a record of 302 rushing yards in his debut. This stunning feat not only earned it a school-record but also an all-time Division II record for most yards by a player in their first game. By the fifth game, he had already amassed 1,091 yards becoming the leading Division II rusher while finishing the year with 2,421 rushing yards.

His impressive performance in his sophomore year paid dividends. He received the male athlete of the year award in his conference, was an All-American, and was the Harlon Hill Trophy runner-up. He transferred to Youngstown State Penguins for his junior season, finishing Notre Dame College with 4,737 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns.

His productive career at Youngstown State made him a record holder as college football’s all-time leading rusher, shattering Nate Kmic’s record. Despite his record-breaking performances in college football, McLaughlin was overlooked in the 2023 NFL draft but was later signed by the Denver Broncos.

McLaughlin’s NFL journey has been as splendid as his college career. He made it to the Denver Broncos’ final roster and scored his first career touchdown in week 2. He appeared in all 17 games in his rookie season, with 76 carries for 410 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown, along with 31 receptions for 160 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.
