BIOGRAPHY
Hassan Ridgeway, born on November 2, 1994, is a professional American football player known for his skills as a defensive tackle. Although he is currently a free agent, Ridgeway has a substantial history in the National Football League (NFL), beginning his career as a player for the Indianapolis Colts before moving onto the Philadelphia Eagles, the San Francisco 49ers, and finally, the Houston Texans.
A Texas native, Ridgeway grew up in Mansfield and discovered his prowess on the football field at Mansfield High School. Upon impressing scouts, he earned a spot at the University of Texas at Austin to play college football. From 2012 to 2015, Ridgeway showcased his talents for the college, starring in 36 games with 18 starts throughout his collegiate career. During this period, he managed a significant 92 tackles along with 9.5 sacks. After his outstanding performances in his junior year, he projected himself onto the professional platform, entering the 2016 NFL draft.
In the NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts claimed Ridgeway in the fourth round, casting him as the 116th overall pick. Officially sealing his evolution from a college star to a professional player, Ridgeway signed his rookie contract with the Colts on May 5, 2016. Over his first three NFL years, he made his mark as a strong player, participating in 34 games, and registering 41 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
Ridgeway’s skill set enticed the Philadelphia Eagles, who traded a seventh-round pick (246th overall) for him in the 2019 NFL Draft. Notwithstanding a somewhat rocky start to his time with the Eagles, injuries to fellow players Fletcher Cox and Malik Jackson resulted in Ridgeway starting the next five games for the Eagles. Nevertheless, his season was unfortunately cut short after he suffered an ankle injury during a week 7 game which caused him to be placed on injured reserve. Bouncing back, Ridgeway renewed a one-year contract with the Eagles for the 2020 season. However, his season was again disrupted by an injury to his bicep in week 7.
The year 2021 again saw Ridgeway re-sign with the Eagles. The following year, he subsequently moved west, inking a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers. With the 49ers, Ridgeway’s season ended prematurely after suffering a pectoral strain in Week 13, causing him to sit out for 6-8 weeks.
By March 18, 2023, Ridgeway had moved on to the Houston Texans, after signing a one-year contract. Unfortunately, injury woes continued to follow him. After being placed on injured reserve shortly after his arrival on September 13, 2023, he was briefly activated on October 28 of the same year. However, just over a week later, a torn Achilles penultimately placed him back on injured reserve, prematurely concluding his season.
In summary, Hassan Ridgeway is an American football professional recognized for his impressive defensive skills on the field though his career has been repeatedly hampered by injury setbacks. From his roots in Texas college football to his stints with the Colts, Eagles, 49ers, and Texans, Ridgeway remains a powerful figure in the defensive mix and is sure to continue leaving his mark on the football field.
