Gunner Olszewski

Born on November 26, 1996, Kaleb Gunner Olszewski is an accomplished professional football player hailing from Alvin, Texas. His career has spanned various teams within the National Football League (NFL), including the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and currently, the New York Giants. Not limited to only one position, Olszewski seamlessly transitions between roles as a wide receiver and return specialist.

Before his professional career, Olszewski cut his teeth in the world of college football, earning a reputation for his skills at Bemidji State University in Minnesota. Here, he played as a cornerback, making a name for himself in this highly competitive arena. During his freshman season in 2015, Olszewski was honored as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Newcomer of the Year. His exceptional defensive abilities were further recognized in 2018 when he was named the Defensive Player of the Year in his senior year by the NSIC.

Despite his collegiate success, Olszewski was overlooked in the 2019 NFL draft. However, undeterred by this setback, Olszewski attended rookie minicamps hosted by the Minnesota Vikings and the New England Patriots, where his talents were finally recognized. After impressing the Patriots as a wide receiver, he was signed as an undrafted free agent, following Jared Veldheer’s retirement that granted an opening in the roster.

Olszewski made his NFL debut in a Patriot’s victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, setting his career into motion. He continued to refine his skills, demonstrating his versatility as a wide receiver, and paved his path to becoming a reliable player for the team. Despite unfortunate bouts of injuries that put him on the sideline for a time, Olszewski remained undeterred and eventually made a triumphant return.

During the 2020 season, Olszewski made history with his extraordinary punt returns in the games against the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers, despite a penalty that negated one of his remarkable 82-yard successes. His efforts were well rewarded, as he was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his extraordinary performance in Week 13. Olszewski ended the season with a league-high 346 punt return yards on merely 20 returns, a commendable average of 17.3 yards per return – the second highest total since the AFL-NFL merger. This extraordinary stint earned him a place in the 2020 AP All-Pro first team as a punt returner, making him the first Patriot to receive this honor.

His remarkable journey continued with a stint playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, after which he made his transition to the New York Giants in late 2023. Olszewski’s phenomenal punt return abilities manifested yet again in a spectacular 94-yard punt return for a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17. Although initially thought to have broken a club record, he ultimately fell just short of the standing 95 yards record set back in 1928.
