BIOGRAPHY

Grant Stuard, an American professional football player, was born on October 15, 1998, and currently plays the position of a linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts, a team in the National Football League (NFL). His journey to the NFL began with his college football career at the University of Houston and was solidified when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers honored him with the final pick in the 2021 NFL draft. This selection earned him the moniker “Mr. Irrelevant”, a term affectionately used to refer to the last athlete picked in the draft.

Stuard’s path to professional football, however, was not devoid of trials. He grew up carrying significant responsibility for his four siblings, navigating through the challenges brought on by his mother’s battle with drug addiction and his father’s incarceration. Despite such circumstances, he found solace and strength in football.

During his time at the University of Houston, Stuard was primarily positioned as a linebacker but he also had a stint as a running back. In his four active years with the university, he showcased his potential as a promising future NFL player. In the 2017 season, the freshman player participated in seven games before tragically tearing his meniscus, thus causing him to sit out four games including the iconic 2017 Hawaii Bowl. That season, he managed to record two assisted tackles, both against Rice University.

In the subsequent 2018 season, Stuard played 13 games with one start. He notably led the 2018 Houston Cougars football team with 11 special teams tackles. Later in the year, he transitioned to the running back position where he tallied up 35 yards running the ball from five attempts. That season also saw him making 30 tackles, with 18 solo and 12 assisted.

The 2019 season witnessed Stuard start all 12 games. He achieved an outstanding 97 tackles which led the team and included 9.5 tackles for loss, placing third in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). Moreover, he recorded 1 sack and 4 pass deflections, an effort that earned him a place in the 2019 All-AAC Second-team.

Going into the COVID-affected 2020 season, he wore the captain’s armband for his senior year and once again led the Cougars in tackles. He recorded 61 total tackles, consisting of 35 solo tackles, across the seven-game regular season. Impressively, he led the AAC in tackles per game with an average of 8.4 tackles per match. In an unprecedented change of events, he altered his uniform number from 3 to 0 in his senior season. Stuard opted to skip the 2020 New Mexico Bowl to focus on preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft.

His considerable skillset caught the attention of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who singled him out with the final pick (259th overall) in the 2021 NFL draft, conferring him with the title of “Mr. Irrelevant.” He officially signed his four-year rookie contract with Tampa Bay on May 13, 2021. However, a surprising twist of fate moved him to the Indianapolis Colts on August 30, 2022, along with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

On December 3, 2023, Stuard achieved a milestone early on in his career when he scored his first NFL touchdown. He accomplished this by returning an 18-yard blocked punt during the Colts’ overtime triumph against the Tennessee Titans. Adding to his growing fame, Stuard even made a humorous appearance in a television ad for Uber Eats during his rookie season. The advertisement cheekily referenced his Mr. Irrelevant status by interrupting him just as he is about to state his name.
