Gerrit Prince's Biography

Gerrit Prince, born on August 25, 1997 in Shawnee, Kansas, has crafted an illustrious career in American football, primarily as a tight end. Throughout his early life, Prince showed a passion for football and the drive to excel at it from a nascent stage. Prior to making a mark at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) or joining the NFL as a free agent, Prince started his journey at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.

As an unranked high school wide receiver, Prince demonstrated his resolve by committing to Butler Community College. His zealous approach to the sport led to a playing streak in every game of the 2017 season at Butler, compiling an impressive total of 566 receiving yards along with 11 touchdowns. The experience and exposure gained at Butler laid the groundwork for Prince’s college football career at UAB.

Arriving at UAB in 2018, Prince played in four games and opted for a redshirted season. The following year proved to be a turning point in Prince’s career. Showcasing persistence and determination, he played in all 14 games of the 2019 season, and even started in one game, making notable contributions through his 23 yards and one touchdown.

Prince carried his momentum into the 2020 season. Despite the challenging environment, he played robustly in eight games, starting in six of them. Additionally, his outstanding performance secured him an honorable mention in the All-Conference USA Team.

His breakthrough season came in 2021, a testament to his tenacity and hard work. In the course of 13 games, he started in 11, recording 36 receptions for 699 yards and 10 touchdowns. This culminated in him being honored as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week and earning the John Mackey Tight End of the Week award. Furthermore, he received the prestigious Second Team All-Conference USA honors.

Following his stellar college career, Prince experienced undrafted amateur free agency. Yet, his skills and potential were unmistakable, and on May 2, 2022, he was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. This marked a significant moment for Prince, propelling him from college football into the dynamic sphere of NFL.

Prince’s dedication and performance earned him a reserve/future contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 23, 2023. However, in a turn of events, the team released him amidst final roster cuts on August 29, 2023.

Undeterred by this setback, Prince was enlisted into the practice squad of Kansas City Chiefs the very next day. This significant development in his career trajectory culminated with him becoming a Super Bowl champion, when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Prince’s journey, however, was far from over. On July 21, 2024, he was waived by Kansas City Chiefs. Despite these ups and downs, Gerrit Prince remains a sterling figure in American football today, contributing substantially as a tight end and embracing the dynamism that marks the NFL, showing that he is a force to be reckoned with on the field. His career serves as a testament to resilience, commitment, and a passion for football.
