Derek Barnett

Derek Anthony Barnett, born on June 25, 1996, has gained recognition as an American professional football defensive end. A player for the Houston Texans under the National Football League (NFL), he has demonstrated his exceptional talent on the field. His journey in the world of sports began during his college years when he played football for the Tennessee Volunteers. His impressive performance led him to be chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles as the 14th overall in the iconic 2017 NFL draft.

Barnett’s high school years were spent at Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, Tennessee. It was during this time when he started hitting his stride, making 60 tackles, 18 of which were for a loss, and 5.5 sacks during his senior year. The recruiting network, Rivals.com, recognized his potential and rated him as a four-star recruit.

In 2013, Barnett committed to the University of Tennessee, playing college football under Head Coach Butch Jones. He etched his name in history by becoming the first true freshman defensive lineman to start the season opener for Tennessee. This was a clear indication of the meteoric rise he was about to experience.

Barnett truly came into his own during the 2014 season, following a record-making year. Both he and Myles Garrett from Texas A&M shattered Jadeveon Clowney’s SEC freshman sack record, which was previously 8.0. Then, in 2015, Barnett began his starting sophomore season with commanding performances that continued to affirm his football prowess.

By 2016, his junior year, he became a household name in Tennessee. He made headlines for a seven-tackle performance in an overtime home victory over Appalachian State. This was a sign of greater things to come.

On December 30, 2016, Barnett made history in the 2016 Music City Bowl by breaking the University of Tennessee career sack record of 32.0. This record was formerly held by none other than Pro Football Hall of Famer Reggie White. Later, Barnett forgoes his final season of eligibility and declares for the 2017 NFL Draft.

Shortly after his departure from Tennessee, Barnett was projected to be a promising first-round pick by the majority of NFL draft experts and scouts. He attended the NFL Combine where he demonstrated his skills, despite being hampered by a stomach bug. Despite this, he was ranked among the top defensive end prospects by several networks including ESPN and Sports Illustrated.

On April 28, 2017, Barnett was officially selected by the Philadelphia Eagles as the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He performed admirably for the Eagles, even making significant contributions to their historic Super Bowl LII victory against the New England Patriots in 2018. Despite suffering a shoulder injury that cut his season short in 2018, Barnett continued to make his mark on the field in the following seasons.

However, after suffering a major knee injury in 2022, Barnett was sidelined for a significant period. Eventually, on November 24, 2023, he was waived by the Eagles. Shortly after, on November 27, he was claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans where he resumed his exceptional performance, contributing to a victory in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

Despite his many achievements and remarkable football career, Barnett’s journey in professional football continues. He stays true to his passion and re-signs with the Texans on April 1, 2024.
