Courtland Sutton, an American professional football wide receiver, was born on October 10, 1995. He is currently playing for the Denver Broncos in the National Football League (NFL). Sutton’s journey to the NFL started when he showcased his football skills at Brenham High School in Brenham, Texas. He played impressively as a tight end and a safety and earned himself the title of the first-team All-District as a senior. The 2013 season saw his high school finish with an excellent record of 14-2, only being defeated by Aledo in the UIL 4A Division 2 state championship game.
Sutton was a hot prospect and rated a three-star athlete by ESPN, he eventually committed to Southern Methodist University (SMU), despite having significant offers from other colleges like BYU, Colorado, and Rice. Despite an injury that forced Sutton to take a medical redshirt after two games in his true freshman year at SMU in 2014, he bounced back. In 2015, he showed remarkable resilience as a redshirt freshman by starting all 12 games and recording an impressive 49 receptions for 862 yards and nine touchdowns.
Sutton continued his strong performance and started all games in his sophomore year in 2016. He achieved 76 receptions for 1,246 yards and ten touchdowns. Although he was considering entering the 2017 NFL draft, Sutton chose to continue his college career for an additional redshirt junior year. He made the official announcement of his entry into the 2018 NFL draft on December 22, 2017.
The Denver Broncos saw his potential and drafted him in the second round (40th overall) during the 2018 NFL Draft. Sutton had his NFL debut, making two receptions for 45 yards in the Broncos’ victorious season-opener against the Seattle Seahawks. In Week 5, he achieved his first professional touchdown against the New York Jets. His rookie season ended with him recording 42 receptions for 704 yards and four touchdowns.
Sutton began the next year with a loss against the Oakland Raiders on Monday Night Football, leaving Sutton with seven passes for 120 yards. Multiple impressive performances followed this throughout the season with one of his best coming against the Los Angeles Chargers where he scored a 70-yard touchdown. Sutton ended the 2019 season with 72 receptions for 1,112 receiving yards and six touchdowns earning himself a spot in the Pro Bowl. Sutton became the fastest Denver Bronco wide receiver to earn this achievement, breaking the record set by Demaryius Thomas.
Sutton had a challenging start to the 2020 season, missing the first week due to a shoulder injury. His debut in the following week against Pittsburgh Steelers saw him leaving the field earlier with a knee injury. It was later confirmed that he suffered a torn ACL, leading to him being placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Despite this setback, on November 22, 2021, Sutton signed a four-year $60.8 million contract extension with the Broncos through the 2025 season. Sutton’s triumphant return in the 2021 season saw him finish with 58 receptions for 776 yards and two touchdowns. The 2022 season saw Sutton making 64 receptions for 829 receiving yards with two touchdowns. Sutton continued to excel in the 2023 season, gaining 772 yards and ten touchdowns through 59 receptions. He also had a streak of five consecutive games with a touchdown.
