Colton McKivitz's Biography

Colton McKivitz was born on the 9th of August, 1996, in Ohio, U.S. Today, he holds the position of a commendable professional football offensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers, a prestigious team in the National Football League (NFL). However, his journey to professional football started much earlier, truly taking shape during his college years.

McKivitz was raised in Belmont, Ohio, where he showcased immense talent for football early on. He commenced his football journey at East Richland Christian High School before transferring to Union Local High School before his sophomore year. His undeniable prowess on the field made headlines when, as a senior, McKivitz was named first-team All-Ohio. His football legacy at Union Local was cemented when his jersey number was retired by the school in 2019.

McKivitz, as a 3-star recruit, had initially committed to play college football at Miami of Ohio. However, he later switched his commitment to West Virginia University, choosing it over offers from several other colleges, including Akron, Bowling Green, Kent State, Marshall, and Toledo.

During his first season at University, McKivitz redshirted, meaning he practiced with the team and attended classes but did not participate in games. However, this period proved to be a mere prelude to his bright football career as he joined the West Virginia Mountaineers’ starting line-up just four games into his redshirt freshman season. This opportunity arose following an ACL tear by the team’s starting left tackle, Yodny Cajuste. McKivitz swiftly stepped up, starting the final ten games of the season.

In his redshirt sophomore year, McKivitz transitioned to the right tackle position and started all 13 games of the season. His remarkable performance on the field earned him honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference honors. As a redshirt junior, he again demonstrated his steadfast commitment and hard work, starting all 12 games of the season for the Mountaineers.

As he transitioned into his redshirt senior season, McKivitz returned to left tackle. His outstanding performance this season led to him being named first-team All-Big 12, the Big 12 co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, and a Second-team All-America by Walter Camp. He also received an additional accolade, the Associated Press’s third-team.

Building on his triumphant stint in college football, McKivitz was picked in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft with the 153rd pick by none other than the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers acquired the selection by trading Matt Breida with the Miami Dolphins. With the start of his career at the NFL, McKivitz rapidly made his mark by making his NFL debut in Week 2 against the New York Jets.

November 29, 2020 marked a significant milestone in McKivitz’s career as he made his first career start, lining up at right guard and playing all 72 of the 49ers offensive snaps in a thrilling 23-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Some ups and downs ensued when he was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on December 16, 2020 but thankfully, he was activated on December 25.

The initial setback didn’t deter his journey. On August 31, 2021, despite being briefly waived by the 49ers, he bounced back with a return to the practice squad the very next day. His perseverance was rewarded with a promotion to the active roster on November 10, 2021.

McKivitz has been a force to reckon with ever since. He re-signed with the 49ers on March 10, 2022, even though he had to endure a high ankle sprain early into the session. Yet, he overcame this hurdle and was quickly activated on November 12. A year later, in 2023, he signed a two-year contract extension, a testament to his worth on the 49ers’ team. One of the most significant highlights of his career was being a starter at Super Bowl LVIII, a feat not accomplished by many.

In 2024, even though the 49ers tragically lost to the Chiefs in an overtime defeat of 25-22, it didn’t deter McKivitz’s place in the team. Recognizing his contribution and talent, the team extended a one-year contract worth $7 million, taking his contract with the team through the 2025 season. His prowess and commitment to the game never fail to impress and make him an integral part of the San Francisco 49ers to date.
