Christopher Rodriguez Jr., born on September 26, 2000, is a notable figure in American professional football. He serves as a running back for the Washington Commanders, a team that is an integral part of the prestigious National Football League (NFL). Rodriguez’s journey in professional football blossomed from his successful college football years, where he cast a long-lasting impression on the Kentucky Wildcats’ history.

Born and raised in McDonough, Georgia, Rodriguez had developed a profound interest in football since childhood. Fascinatingly, he started his sports journey by playing center on the offensive line during his middle school years. However, a severe arm injury in the seventh grade led to a significant shift in his position—he became a fullback upon his return after recovery.

As Rodriguez transitioned into high school, his football journey took an exciting turn. Attending Ola High School, he was moved to play as a running back. This new position brought forward his exceptional skills as he recorded an impressive 1,669 yards and 25 touchdowns in his senior year alone. His promising skills didn’t go unnoticed as he was rated a three-star running back prospect. These substantial achievements led him to receive multiple offers for college football from established schools. Among all the appealing offers, Rodriguez chose to commit to the Kentucky Wildcats, leaving behind tempting offers from schools such as Colorado State, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss.

Rodriguez’s time at Kentucky is marked by steady progress and notable achievements. During his true freshman season, he participated in three games and remarkably rushed twice for 43 yards. However, he chose to redshirt the rest of the season. In 2019, as a redshirt freshman, he showcased an impressive performance by rushing 71 times for 533 yards and scoring six touchdowns. The subsequent year, as a redshirt sophomore, Rodriguez became the Wildcats’ leading rusher, boasting 785 yards and 11 touchdowns. His escalating success continued when, as a redshirt junior in 2021, he rushed for 1,272 yards and eight touchdowns in a single regular season.

However, Rodriguez’s journey was not without hurdles. In May 2022, he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and careless driving. Rodriguez pleaded guilty two months later, leading to a fine of US$200 and loss of his driver’s license for half a year. Subsequently, he faced accusations of filing inaccurate time cards during his part-time job at UK HealthCare, resulting in his suspension from the first four games of the 2022 season.

Despite the setbacks, Rodriguez’s resiliency shone through. His glorious moment arrived during the 2022 Citrus Bowl, where his six-yard rushing touchdown against the Iowa Hawkeyes took the Kentucky team to a triumphant 20-17 victory. Notably, Rodriguez had also served as a two-time team captain during his time at Kentucky. In recognition of his accomplishments, he graduated with a degree in community and leadership development in May 2022. He made significant marks in the school’s history— finishing second in career rushing touchdowns and third in cumulative rushing yards.

Rodriguez’s successful college career paved the way for his entry into the NFL. He was chosen by the Washington Commanders in the sixth round, as the 193rd overall pick, of the 2023 NFL draft. Post his selection, on May 12, 2023, he signed a promising four-year rookie contract. Following a strong preseason performance, where he averaged 7.4 yards per carry, Rodriguez secured his place in the final 53-man roster as the third running back. However, his first year ended prematurely as he was placed on injured reserve due to concussion symptoms after playing 13 games.

After a brief, unfortunate stint on the injured list, Rodriguez bounced back and ended his rookie year with 51 carries for 247 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Despite this successful rebound, he was waived by the team on August 27, 2024. He, however, remained associated with the team by joining their practice squad the next day.

Off the field, Rodriguez, who is affectionately known as “C-Rod,” faced some personal heartbreak early in 2022, when his mother, Stephanie Thornton, passed away from lupus. Her passing was a significant loss for Rodriguez but and it did not deter his commitment and love for the sport.
