Alexander James Barner, known more famously as AJ Barner, is an accomplished professional football player hailing from Aurora, Ohio. Born on May 3, 2002, AJ has carved a notable career in American football, currently adding significance to the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL) as a tight end. He’s been praised for his gusty playing style, leadership traits, and match-winning performances, which he demonstrated time and again while playing college football.

As a young Ohio-native growing up in the early 2000s, AJ Barner harbored an intense passion for football, a love nurtured at Aurora High School, his alma mater. At Aurora, AJ played football in two positions; as a tight end, bulling his way through lines of defenders, and as a linebacker, impervious and unyielding. His talent didn’t go unnoticed; he was chosen as the Northeast Ohio Division III Defensive Player of the year.

Following his competitive senior school years, Barner took his talents to Indiana, joining the Indiana Hoosiers in 2020. The year marked the beginning of his college football career, a journey signposted by pure athletic brilliance. For two seasons running, AJ was a permanent fixture in the Hoosiers line-up, appearing in all twenty games for Indiana between 2020 and 2022.

During his junior year at Indiana, AJ’s maturity and leadership qualities began showing prominence as he was chosen as a team captain of the 2022 Indiana Hoosiers football team. The responsibility brought out his best performances, as he started ten games that season, bringing ‘home’ 28 receptions for a whopping 199 yards area and scoring three remarkable touchdowns.

However, these were just stepping stones for AJ, and in December 2022, he entered the NCAA transfer portal. He willingly accepted an offer from the prestigious University of Michigan, drawn by their recognition and nurturing of the tight end position under the revered guidance of Jim Harbaugh. Such recognition would allow Barner to reach his optimum performance levels, and he did exactly that.

In 2023, he was named on the John Mackey Award watch list, an honor that pays tribute to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. But the crowning moment of his college career came at the end of the 2023 season when he helped Michigan win the National Championship. Barner played a pivotal role, finishing the championship season with 22 catches for 249 yards and a touchdown. His stunning performances earned him a spot as an All-Big Ten honorable mention.

AJ Barner’s dream of playing professional football was realized in the 2024 NFL Draft. He was selected in the fourth round, 121st overall, by the Seattle Seahawks. Although only the start of his professional journey, his achievement in being picked marks another significant milestone in his committed football career.
