Adetokunbo Ogundeji

Adetokunbo Ogundeji, born on October 9, 1998, is an American professional football player of Nigerian descent. Currently, he plays as a linebacker for the revered Pittsburgh Steelers, a team in the National Football League (NFL). Fondly known as Ogundeji, his journey in the football world is both remarkable and inspiring, considering he did not start playing football until his high school years.

Ogundeji hails from West Bloomfield, Michigan. Contrary to many professional football athletes, his football career kick-started only in his freshman year at Walled Lake Central High School. Despite his late entry into the game, Ogundeji showed an impressive flair for the sport, attracting significant attention from college recruiters.

Originally, Ogundeji committed to the Western Michigan team. His skills shone brightly in his junior year when he clocked an impressive statistic of 68 tackles, nine sacks, 17 pass breakups, and four fumble recoveries. These achievements heightened his recruitment potential, leading him to reconsider his choice. Eventually, he de-committed from Western Michigan, instead opting to grace the turf at Notre Dame.

Unfortunately, his senior season at Notre Dame was abruptly ended by a knee injury, casting a shadow on his budding football career. His freshman season was majorly spent on the scout team, where he had no game appearances, while his sophomore season experienced insignificant playing time.

However, things started to look up for Ogundeji in his junior season. He was accorded significant playing time, and he put this opportunity to good use. He rounded off the season with an impressive 25 total tackles, three tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. In his senior year, his stats improved even further—he made 34 tackles, seven tackles for loss, racked up 4.5 sacks, instituted three forced fumbles, and made a significant fumble recovery.

Ogundeji’s collegiate career had one more twist—the decision to return for another seasone as he felt his time at Notre Dame was not yet complete. His final season was met with great success as he claimed seven sacks among other notable performances.

His exceptional college career landed him an opportunity at the 2021 NFL draft. Ogundeji was drafted in the fifth round, with the 182nd overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons. On June 15, 2021, jubilant and ever ready to make his mark in the professional leagues, he signed a four-year rookie contract with Atlanta.

However, every career has its highs and lows. On August 15, 2023, Ogundeji suffered a significant setback when he was placed on injured reserve. The following year, in May 2024, the Falcons released him.

Unfazed by the series of unfortunate events, Ogundeji remained determined to continue his football career. His resilience bore fruit in August 2024, when he was signed by one of the most prestigious teams in the NFL—the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ogundeji joined their practice squad and continued to nurture his football passion with fervor.
