Zeke Nnaji

Ezekiel Tobechukwu “Zeke” Nnaji, born January 9, 2001, is an accomplished professional basketball player hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Nnaji is currently celebrated as a potent force within the Denver Nuggets, an archetypal team within the National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior to his professional encounter, Nnaji demonstrated his prowess in college basketball, where he played for the esteemed Arizona Wildcats and caught the attention of national audience, the Nuggets, who drafted him 22nd overall in the decisive 2020 NBA draft.

Nnaji developed an affinity for sports at a young age. He actively participated in baseball and soccer before his towering height directed him towards basketball. Apart from sports, Nnaji’s talents extend to music where he has nurtured an ability to play the piano since first grade. Over time, Nnaji started composing his music, further demonstrating the dexterity of his skills.

Nnaji’s basketball journey commenced in his high school years. Initially, Lakeville North High School in Lakeville, Minnesota, was his sporting home. However, he later transferred to Hopkins High School located in Minnetonka, Minnesota. During his senior year, Nnaji’s exceptional performance included averaging 24.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Furthermore, he led Hopkins in clinching a Minnesota 4A state title in a glorious victory over Lakeville North. His shining moment arrived in the championship game, where Nnaji registered 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Experiencing great success at high school basketball, Nnaji also participated in club basketball, playing for the Adidas-sponsored D1 Minnesota club. Among his teammates was Matthew Hurt. Nnaji’s talent did not go unseen, and he received an invitation to the prestigious Iverson Classic game. His skills were further recognized by Rivals who ranked him 22nd in his class and gave him a five-star rating, although other sources considered him a four-star recruit. Despite overwhelming offers from colleges such as Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, and UCLA, Nnaji committed to Arizona.

While at Arizona, Nnaji made a striking debut on November 6, 2019, delivering a 20-point performance in 21 minutes supported Arizona in defeating Northern Arizona with a decisive 91-52 score. This sterling effort contributed to him being named Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week, an award he won again in the subsequent week after posting 26 points and 11 rebounds in a victory over San Jose State.

Nnaji achieved a rare feat by becoming the first Arizona player since Brandon Ashley in 2012–13 to score 20 points and gather 10 rebounds in his first three games. His exceptional first-year performance, averaging 16.1 points per game and capturing 8.6 rebounds per game, earned him first-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Nailing his performance, Nnaji declared for the 2020 NBA draft in the wake of this successful season.

Nnaji’s professional journey took a momentous turn when the Denver Nuggets selected him as the 22nd pick in the 2020 NBA draft. He inked his rookie scale contract with the Nuggets on December 1, 2020. Three years later, Nnaji and the Nuggets clinched the 2023 NBA Finals against the Miami Heat, securing his name among NBA champions.

Born to a Nigerian father and Minnesotan mother, Nnaji’s family is quite acquainted with sports. His younger sister Maya played college basketball at Arizona before switching her focus to her education. His uncle, Obiora Nnaji, showcased his potential at center position at the University of Florida from 1997 to 1999. The basketball bloodline in the Nnaji family extends to his cousin, Elvis Nnaji, who aligns his sporting spirit with the George Mason Patriots.
