Nerlens Noel

Nerlens Noel, born on April 10, 1994, is a former professional basketball player who has played for various renowned teams during his 10 year tenure in the National Basketball Association (NBA). His impressive performance as a center and power forward is a testament to his dedication and sporting prowess. His distinguished career, however, was far from straightforward — adversity came early on in his first collegiate basketball season at the University of Kentucky in the form of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Born in Malden, Massachusetts, Nerlens was the son of Haitian immigrants and went to school at Everett High School. During his high school basketball career, Noel transferred to the Tilton School in Tilton, New Hampshire, where he excelled in his senior year, averaging 12.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.9 blocks per game. His talent was recognized by leading sports organizations such as ESPN, Scout.com, and SLAM who ranked Noel as the top basketball player in 2012. Following his successful high school career, Noel chose to play NCAA Division I basketball at the University of Kentucky.

The start of his career in Kentucky was promising. Noel impressed with his excellent defensive skills, particularly his shot-blocking abilities, gaining comparisons to the likes of Anthony Davis. Despite this, his promising athletic career was interrupted by an ACL injury, which forced him to prematurely end his first and only collegiate season.

Despite the setback, Noel’s talent and potential were undeniable. That same year, in 2013, Noel became the sixth overall pick in the NBA drafts, selected by the New Orleans Pelicans. His draft rights were soon traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he would embark on his professional basketball career.

Noel’s rookie year didn’t go as planned due to his recovery from knee surgery, causing him to miss the entire season. However, he made a strong comeback in the following 2014 NBA Summer League and would continue to play impressively for the 76ers in the subsequent seasons. Throughout his time with the 76ers, Noel participated in multiple events, such as the 2015 Rising Stars Challenge, proving his growth and talent as an exceptional basketball player. His success was further emphasized when the 76ers exercised their fourth-year team option on Noel’s rookie scale contract, extending his contract through the 2016-2017 season.

In 2017, Noel was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He had a successful debut and quickly established himself as an invaluable player for the team, facilitated by performances like the one against Memphis Grizzlies where he scored 15 points and made 17 rebounds. Despite facing minor setbacks, such as a torn ligament injury in his left thumb, Noel continued to play an integral role for the Mavericks until his contract ended in 2018.

He later signed a contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder and delivered memorable performances like the 20 points and 15 rebounds game against the Phoenix Suns. This chapter in his career ended in 2020 when he signed a contract with the New York Knicks. With the Knicks, Noel made significant contributions, such as the 13 point and ten rebound match against the Philadelphia 76ers, assisting the Knicks in reaching the playoffs for the first time in seven years.

However, his time with the Knicks was short-lived, as he was traded to the Detroit Pistons in 2022. His role on the team was short and limited due to injuries, and he eventually reached a contract buyout agreement with the Pistons. Following this, he had a brief stint with the Brooklyn Nets before signing with the Sacramento Kings in mid-2023.

Outside his professional trajectory, Nerlens places great importance on family. He is the middle child in a family of five, with two older brothers who have also played for Division I college football programs. As such, Nerlens Noel’s story is not just about overcoming obstacles, but also about family, perseverance, and a love for the game. Today, he stands tall not just as an accomplished basketball player but also as an individual who has persevered against all odds.
