Fairfax Harrison, born on March 13, 1869, was an eminent figure in American history who left a significant mark in the world of law and business. A talented lawyer and a proficient businessman, he marked the annals of history with his vast contributions to the Southern Railway Company.

A lawyer by profession, Harrison distinguished himself in the eyes of the Southern Railway Company in 1896. His impressive work ethic and his prodigious legal skills did not go unnoticed, and within a decade he saw himself being promoted to the position of the company’s vice-president of finance by 1906.

As he maneuvered through the intricate labyrinth of finance, his true leadership skills came to light. 1913 marked a pivotal year in his career when he was elected as the president of Southern. His unyielding tenacity and leadership acumen fueled the expansion of the company to an awe-inspiring 8,000-mile (approximately 13,000 km) network that sprawled across thirteen states.

As the world watched American enter the throes of World War I, the federal government saw the need to seize control of the railroads. This led to the establishment of the United States Railroad Administration, a body on which Harrison served with diligence and dedication.

Post the war, Harrison championed the cause of public relations for the railroad. He perceived the pivotal role PR could play in shaping the image of the institution and was instrumental in its enhancement. His deep understanding of technology also led him to upgrade the locomotive stock by introducing more powerful engines.

Harrison firmly believed in growth and this was mirrored in his continuous endeavors to increase the company’s amount of railroad track and extend the service area. His commitment to the cause was unshakeable and this led to a considerable increase in Southern’s service area.

However, the journey wasn’t all smooth sailing. With the onset of the Great Depression, Harrison faced one of the greatest challenges in his career. His leadership was put to the ultimate test while trying to keep the railroad afloat during these tumultuous times. He, however, remained undeterred. The fruits of his labor became visible by 1936 when Southern regained its profitability.

After an illustrious career, Harrison finally retired in 1937. His retirement, however, was short-lived as he passed away just three months later in 1938.

Coincidentally, Ethel Reed, an internationally recognized American graphic artist who was born a few years after Harrison, on March 13, 1874, also left a significant mark in American history. A photograph from circa 1895 of Reed, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston, proudly sits in the U.S. Library of Congress.
