Jalen Duren

Born on the 18th of November, 2003, Jalen Montez Duren, an American professional basketball player, has made his mark as one of the country’s finest young talents in the world of basketball. Scaled at a towering height of 6 feet 10 inches (2.08 m) and weighing considerably at 250 pounds (113 kg), the center-forward is a force to reckon with on the court. Currently, he plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the well-known Detroit Pistons having previously donned the jersey of Memphis Tigers in college basketball games. He was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top-ranking players in 2021 and topped the list as the number one player in the 2022 class before being reclassified.

Jalen was born in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania. Young Jalen was not just restricted to basketball during his formative years but was also interested in other sports like football and baseball. However, he gravitated towards basketball as he realized his skills were better served on the court. He started gathering attention when he was in the 8th grade, measuring approximately 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m) at that time. He was soon recognized on the AAU circuit playing with Team Final and even won the MADE League title. He proved his mettle at the MADE Middle School Academy and the CP3 Rising Stars Camp, solidifying his position as one of the upcoming talents of his time.

In high school, Duren chose to play at Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic High School alongside his AAU teammate and highly-ranked guard Justice Williams. In his freshman year, he averaged 12.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game with a shooting efficiency of 71 percent from the field. This enabled his team to win their second consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League title. He was conferred with multiple awards that summer such as the first-team all-league, second-team all-state honors, and was named a MaxPreps Freshman All-American. His performances did not stop there, and he became a standout at the 2019 Nike Elite 100 Camp.

Duren had a notable second year as well, achieving 18.1 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.4 blocks per game and made his team finish the season with an 18–10 record. His excellence on the court also included game-winning buzzer beater in the Catholic League playoffs, and he earned honors like being named first-team all-league, first-team all-state and MaxPreps Sophomore All-American.

In his junior year, Duren moved to Montverde Academy, where he continued his dominance on the court. His performances against top-tier competition at the St. James NIBC Invitational were impressive, making him one of the five underclassmen named to the Sports Illustrated Preseason All-American team. He performed exceptionally well throughout the season resulting in him being recognized as the 2020–21 MaxPreps Florida High School Basketball Player of the Year. Moreover, Duren overtook Emoni Bates as the top prospect in the 2022 recruiting class.

Duren then moved on to further his basketball journey in college by committing to play for Memphis, opting to ignore offers from competitive institutions and leagues like Kentucky, Miami (Florida), NBA G League, and the Australia NBL. Throughout his college career, Duren continued to impress with strong performances. He led the Tigers to their first NCAA tournament since 2014. His average score as a freshman was 12 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game.

Duren finally declared for the NBA draft in 2022, forfeiting his remaining college eligibility. He was selected as the 13th overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets but soon had his rights traded to New York Knicks and eventually to Detroit Pistons. After joining the Pistons, Duren put on some remarkable performances and smashed records. He even matched one of LeBron James’s records, becoming one of the only teenagers in NBA history to score 23 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in a game.

Apart from his NBA exploits, Duren also had international success, representing the United States at the 2019 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship held in Belém, Brazil. He played a vital role in their victory and securing a spot for himself on the gold medal-winning all-star team.

Duren’s game is characterised by not just his towering size, but also his strength, athleticism, and an excellent footwork that are admired by many recruiters and sportswriters. His game is NBA-ready while he continues to be in his early years, which has drawn comparisons to players like Bam Adebayo and Marvin Bagley III.
