Luka Garza

Luka H. Garza, born on December 27, 1998, is a Bosnian-American prolific basketball player currently plying his trade for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the prestigious National Basketball Association (NBA). He also represents the Bosnian and Herzegovinian national team. Born and raised in Reston, Virginia, Garza grew up immersed in the basketball culture fostered by his father, Frank, an ex-player for Idaho.

Garza had basketball running in his veins from an early age. His mother, Šejla, a native of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was a professional basketball player in Europe. Frank, with his extensive archive of game footage of former NBA post players, particularly Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was instrumental in shaping Garza’s understanding and appreciation of the game.

Garza started his journey to stardom at Maret School in his hometown of Washington, D.C. Standing at 6 ft 7 in during his freshman year, Garza was already a promising prospect, though he could not dunk a basketball until he was a sophomore. His high school tenure was marked by remarkable strides in his gameplay under the tutelage of renowned coach Chuck Driesell.

As a senior at Maret, Garza averaged 24.6 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game. He led his team to the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) title game and bagged the prestigious D.C. Gatorade Player of the Year honors.

Choosing college basketball for Iowa over offers from Georgetown, Georgia, and Notre Dame, Garza continued to demonstrate his prodigious talent on the court. During his freshman year, he averaged 12.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Notwithstanding health issues in his sophomore year, which saw him endure surgery to remove a nine-pound cyst from his spleen and battle a sprained ankle, Garza upped his average to 13.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

During his junior year at college, Garza’s relentless dedication paid off when he was named the Big Ten Player of the Year. His exceptional form continued into his senior year as he became the first player in Iowa men’s basketball history to be named the Big Ten Player of the Year twice and a consensus first-team All-American.

After a stellar college career, Garza declared for the 2020 NBA Draft but later withdrew, deciding to return to Iowa. Eventually, he was selected with the 52nd overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 2021 NBA Draft. Following an outstanding Summer League performance, Garza was offered a two-way contract by the Pistons. However, he was later released, and in August 2022, he signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Going beyond his NBA engagements, Garza has also consistently represented the Bosnian and Herzegovinian national team at the international level since acquiring dual citizenship in December 2021.

Garza’s lineage holds a rich pedigree in sports. His father, of Spanish American origin, and his Bosnian mother, Šejla, both played professional basketball. His maternal uncle, Bosnian-born Teo Alibegović, was the all-time leading scorer for the Slovenia national basketball team, and his cousins Amar Alibegović, Mirza Alibegović and Denis Alibegović are all professional basketball players in Europe.

Garza’s success stems from his relentless passion for the game combined with natural talent passed down in the family.
