Kobe Bufkin's Biography

Kobe Bufkin entered the world on September 21, 2003, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the product of Kimberly Camp and Michael Bufkin. From the earliest days of his life, basketball rocked the cradle of his existence. At the tender age of five, Kobe stated his ambition to join the ranks of the Michigan Wolverines football team.

His early affinity for sports would blossom throughout his high school years. Bufkin attended Grand Rapids Christian High School, where he began to make a natural transition from football to basketball and quickly settled into his role on the varsity team. As a sophomore, he soared, achieving an average of 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists per match and propelling his team to a 16-6 record.

By his junior year, Kobe was known as a leading basketball player not only in his school but also in Michigan. Though his potential was glimpsed in these early years, it was the beginning of his senior year that truly underlined his future as a professional basketball player. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and a fractured left wrist, Bufkin averaged 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists per game in the five games he was able to play.

Over the course of his senior year, he was honored as a premium talent by being named to the McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic rosters. After his outstanding high school career, he was ranked third in Michigan’s class of 2021.

Bufkin’s shooting guard skills caught the eye of many college recruiters, but he committed to the Michigan Wolverines – keeping his childhood dream alive. Though he was a significant asset to the Wolverines, playing a key role in taking them to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, his personal standout moment came in his sophomore year when he averaged 14 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists and played for an average of 34 minutes per game. This performance cemented his place as a genuinely exceptional talent and earned him All-Big Ten third-team recognition.

After a successful two years of college, Bufkin qualified for the NBA draft. He was picked by the Atlanta Hawks as the fifteenth overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft. This validation from basketball’s elite was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to his craft.

Despite the challenges he faced in his early NBA career, including starting in an unfamiliar role as point guard during the Summer League, Bufkin took it all in stride and worked through these initial growing pains. However, it was after his stint with the College Park Skyhawks, Hawks’ NBA G-League affiliate, that Kobe emerged a key player he had always promised to be, averaging 23.6 points, 5.9 assists, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.4 steals over 14 appearances.

His performance in the G league was rewarded with a regular spot in the main Atlanta rotation, especially prominent during the injury of the Hawks’ star player Trae Young in early 2024. Though he faced a rough patch with an injury to his left toe, he bounced back with a vengeance, showing off his tenacity and sheer talent in every performance.
