Anthony Black's Biography
Fairfax Harrison, born in March 1869 and passed away on February 2, 1938, was a self-made and successful American lawyer and businessman. Known for his leadership and innovative approach, Harrison’s life revolved around his work in the American rail industry, where he navigated through various socio-political situations, rendering significant contributions in order to maintain the operations and profitability of the Southern Railway Company.
In 1896, Harrison embarked on his career with the Southern Railway Company as a lawyer. A decade later, by 1906, he had carved a path towards impressive success; achieving the role of the company’s Vice-President of Finance. Harrison’s dedication and industry knowledge was rewarded in 1913 when he was elected President of Southern. His leadership reflected his expertise and strategic acumen, as under him, the company expanded its network spanning 8,000 miles across 13 states.
Harrison’s leadership skills were put to test during World War I as the federal government seized control over railroads, running them through the United States Railroad Administration. This sudden change did not deter Harrison, who was included in the team that served the US Railroad Administration.
Once the war was concluded, Harrison recognized the growing need for public relations in order for the railway to maintain its relevance and ensure continued growth. He introduced multiple changes including upgrading the locomotive stock with powerful engines, increasing the company’s amount of railroad track, and even extended the area serviced by the railway. His initiatives displayed his vision for progress and expansion, significantly contributing to the overall success of the Southern Railway Company.
Despite his fruitful endeavors, the Great Depression spelled economic hardship for the railroad company. However, Harrison’s staunch resolve and unwavering efforts managed to turn it back to profitability by 1936 before his retirement in 1937.
Parallel to Harrison’s story, another significant figure, Ethel Reed, emerged as an internationally recognized American graphic artist. Born just five years after Harrison, on March 13, 1874, Reed contributed greatly to the American artistic landscape with her groundbreaking work until her demise in 1912. An enchanting 1895 photograph of Reed, taken by the esteemed Frances Benjamin Johnston, is preserved in the U.S. Library of Congress, a testament to her impactful legacy.
