Jarrett Culver

The tale of Jarrett Ryan Culver, a professional basketball player, is a compelling narrative filled with determination, grit, and sporting prowess. Born on February 20, 1999, to proud parents Regina and Hiawatha Culver Jr., Culver hails from the vast landscape of Dallas, Texas. However, when he turned three, the Culver family relocated to a little city called Lubbock in Texas, which is where Culver spent the majority of his blossoming years.

Regina, a director at a local Head Start, and his father, Hiawatha, a revered pastor at Rising Star Baptist Church, instilled a strong sense of determination and faith in young Culver. Before he would become known for his prowess on the basketball court, Culver was an enthusiastic football and soccer player. His passion for basketball was ignited during his time at Irons Middle School.

Growing up, Culver had two older brothers, Trey and J.J., who kindled his love for basketball. The three brothers would often play NBA 2K and engage in friendly games of pickup basketball in their driveway. This nurtured Culver’s talent, setting the stage for his successful foray into high school basketball.

Culver attended Coronado High School in Lubbock, where he flourished under the guidance of head coach Randy Dean. As a junior, he averaged 20 points per game, propelling his team to the 6A regional semifinals. He was also honored as the Lone Star Varsity Player of the Year by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. In his senior campaign, Culver displayed remarkable leadership abilities, averaging around 30 points per game and topping his team in rebounds and assists. Despite re-aggravating a shoulder injury from his junior year, Culver still guided Coronado to the playoffs and repeated his title as the Lone Star Varsity Player of the Year, further establishing his credentials as a promising basketball player.

Culver’s exceptional skills did not go unnoticed, and he received several offers from multiple NCAA Division I programs, with Texas Tech being the one he eventually committed to on September 22, 2016. His college career began with a victory against South Alabama, where he scored 2 points in a short span of 16 minutes on November 10, 2017. Delivering consistent performances throughout his freshman year, he averaged 11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game, earning him recognition not only within the college circuit but also beyond it.

His sophomore season witnessed Culver becoming a force to be reckoned with, as he morphed into a leading player following the departures of key players Zhaire Smith and Keenan Evans. Culver’s mind-blowing performance in the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament sharply placed his name among the elite. Despite some rough games during the Final Four championships, he managed to score 15 points in an overtime loss to Virginia.

Following a successful college stint, Culver declared for the 2019 NBA draft. Selected as the 6th pick in the NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns, his rights were traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, marking his official entry into the professional basketball circuit. His best game to date was played against the Toronto Raptors, where he netted a career-high 26 points.

Culver’s journey with the NBA saw a few bumps, as he underwent season-ending right ankle surgery in May 2021. After recovery, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, played for Atlanta Hawks for a brief period, and was traded to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Later, he landed with the Orlando Magic and then the Osceola Magic in recent years.

Outside of his sporting success, Culver’s life is rooted deeply in his faith. His father, the team chaplain at Texas Tech, helped shape his spiritual connection. Moreover, the bond between the Culver brothers runs deep, with Jarrett having played basketball with older brother J.J. during high school and eldest brother Trey being a decorated athlete in the high jump. Today, Jarrett Culver continues his journey within the professional basketball scene, his story still unfolding as he advances both on and off the court.
