Amir Coffey

Amir Coffey, born on June 17, 1997, is an eminent figure in the world of basketball. Currently, this 6’8″ shooting guard plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Los Angeles Clippers. Hailing from the U.S., Amir boasts an impressive career that’s marked by a combination of hard work, determination, and skills impressively honed over the years.

As a teenager, Coffey attended Hopkins High School situated in Minnetonka, Minnesota, where he honed his basketball skills. As a senior, his towering performance on the court earnt him the prestigious Minnesota Mr. Basketball honors. Coupling this with his Associated Press State Player of the Year and Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year accolades further underlined his rising stature in high school basketball.

Despite not being picked in the 2019 NBA draft, Coffey’s tenacity found him signing a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. His performance blossomed with the Clippers, reaching a season high of 21 points on August 14, 2020, in a nerve-wracking 107-103 overtime win against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Entering 2021, Coffey kept his impressive form, scoring a season-high 15 points in a 125–118 victory against the Miami Heat in February. September 2021 saw him re-ink a two-way contract with the Clippers, which got converted to a standard contract in March of the following year. Coffey’s career continued to evolve, with him scoring a then career-high 32 points on April 1st in an emphatic 153–119 triumph against the Milwaukee Bucks. His peak performance arrived on April 10, scoring a whopping career-high 35 points, fuelling a 138–88 victory over the Thunder.

In July 2022, Coffey re-signed with the Clippers on a lucrative three-year, $11 million deal, reflecting the confidence they had in his capabilities. Echoing Coffey’s achievements are the careers of his family members. His father, Richard Coffey, had a professional career in basketball playing in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves after his college stint at Minnesota. His elder sister, Nia Coffey, followed the family’s sporting tradition and played basketball at Northwestern University, going on to be the fifth overall pick in the 2017 WNBA draft by the San Antonio Stars.
