Alex Ducas's Biography

Alexander Ducas, an Australian professional basketball player, was born in Geraldton, Western Australia, on 11 December 2000. Today, he enjoys a flourishing career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, adding his flair to their game as part of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is also under contract with the Oklahoma City Blue, the team in the NBA G League.

Initially, Ducas showcased his skills in the Australian state leagues before migrating to the United States in 2019. Here, he pursued college basketball with the Saint Mary’s Gaels. During his five seasons with the Gaels, he spotlighted his talent and earned a place in the second-team All-WCC both in 2022 and 2024.

His journey into the realm of basketball began in Geraldton, where he attended Nagle Catholic College. By the year 2016, Ducas had introduced himself to the basketball world through his debut with the local team—Geraldton Buccaneers in the State Basketball League (SBL). Although averaging just 2.27 points across 22 games, his performance was just a teaser of the potential that lay dormant within him.

In 2017, his clear upward trajectory witnessed him playing 13 games for the Buccaneers. He improved his performance, averaging 5.67 points and 1.47 rebounds per game. Concurrently, Ducas took to the court with the BA Centre of Excellence in South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) in five games, where he managed 2.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game.

The following year in 2018, after scoring an average of nine points in three SBL games for the Buccaneers, Ducas returned to the Centre of Excellence, improving his stats by averaging 12.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 14 SEABL games.

2019 offered another opportunity for Ducas to prove his mettle. He played nine games for the Centre of Excellence in NBL1, impressively averaging 21.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. Not stopping there, he finished the year with the Buccaneers in style and helped them to a triumphant SBL championship victory. Over 13 games, he recorded an average of 15.54 points, 3.92 rebounds, and 3.08 assists per game.

Throughout his tenure In Canberra at the Centre of Excellence, Ducas furthered his education at Lake Ginninderra College. His debut for Saint Mary’s took place on 5 November 2019. He chalked up 3 points and 2 rebounds against Wisconsin and managed to carve a niche for himself. As a freshman, Ducas featured in 33 games and started 11 games—a record for a true freshman at Saint Mary’s.

However, his sophomore year brought challenges as he suffered an ankle injury, making him feature in only 14 games. Yet, prior to his injury, he averaged 11.3 points on 35.7% from the three-pointer line. In subsequent years, he enhanced his reputation, with 10.3 points per game as a junior, later increasing it to 12.5 points per game as a senior along with an impressive shooting record of 41.4% from beyond the arc.

In his final season with Saint Mary’s, Ducas demonstrated dedication and hard work, starting every single game for the third consecutive season. He shot a career-best 43.8% from three, marking a whopping 81 shots—the ninth most in team history and the second most in the WCC. At Saint Mary’s, he was instrumental in helping his team win the WCC tournament in 2024, earning him a second time as a second-team All-WCC honoree.

Despite not being drafted in the 2024 NBA draft, Ducas persisted. He joined the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2024 NBA Summer League, resulting in his signing a two-way deal on 16 July 2024. As a testament to his impressive college career, the fifth-year guard played in a program-record 150 games and finished second in all-time program history with 278 threes.

Off-court, basketball runs in the family. As of 2024, his father, Aaron Ducas, is an assistant coach for the Geraldton Buccaneers in the NBL1 West. From his debut in The Buccaneer’s local team to playing professional basketball in the United States, Alexander Ducas’s journey reiterates his unwavering dedication and passion for the game.
