Born on June 25, 2002, Ajay Mitchell is a highly talented Belgian-American basketball player. Currently, he plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team of the highly prestigious National Basketball Association, also known as NBA. Notably, his connection with the franchise further deepens as he’s simultaneously associated with the Oklahoma City Blue, an annexed team of the franchise in the NBA’s G-League via a dual contract.

Mitchell is a product of UC Santa Barbara Gauchos’ college basketball team. His impressive performances over the years led to him being selected in the prestigious 2024 NBA Draft. Born and bred in Ans, Belgium, his basketball journey began at a young age when he started playing for the youth team of Limburg United in 2019.

By the 2019-20 season, Mitchell realized his potential and earned the chance to make appearances for the Limburg United’s senior team in the Pro Basketball League. The next season, 2020-21, Mitchell became a permanent fixture in the senior team, simultaneously preserving his status as an amateur player. During his sophomore year, Mitchell’s game improved further as he averaged an impressive 16.3 points, 5.1 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game. It was no surprise when he was named the Big West Player of the Year, marking a successful conclusion to his second season at UC Santa Barbara.

After his college stint, on June 27, 2024, Ajay Mitchell was selected as the 38th overall pick by the New York Knicks in the 2024 NBA Draft. However, he was immediately traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for the 40th overall pick in the draft and an undisclosed amount of cash. Mitchell formally signed a two-way contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder on July 6, 2024.

A considerable part of Mitchell’s success could be attributed to his father, Barry Mitchell, an accomplished basketball player in his own right. Barry played college basketball at Norfolk State and exhibited his talents professionally in the Continental Basketball Association and World Basketball League.
